Being a Gebirgsjäger, did you need your commander's authorisation to wear an Edelweiß cap badge?

The Edelweiß was the Tradition badge of the Gebirgsjäger and was a mark to show that you had done the training . You got it on passing out of the training for Gebirgsjäger .The only other unit to wear the Edelweiß was some members of Wallonien and that was the Heer patern not SS
