Is this a reference to the 'Taschenbesteck zur Sanitätstasche für Sanitätsoffiziere'?

could be formalin or iodine, both used in irrigation and sterilistion of wounds

also
(1 grey aluminium box with 1 one tube 10ccm Unguentum saliicylici 2%ig)

any more info on the bag etc might shed more light on its overall contents

Sorry, I meant did the item in question (metalkisten...) refer to the 'Taschenbesteck zur Sanitätstasche für Sanitätsoffiziere' as this was held in a metal case inside the bag.

aha! the bigger cases had an enema kit in them, small tins had drugs ,chemicals etc, but as dave asks , they may be a box within the leather case which holds an enema

Hello (again),

I am not sure if my reply got through so here we are again.

The missing word is 'Einsatz' (equipment, tray, item) and refers to the Irrigation Set (water/saline container, rubber tubing, glass and rubber end pieces). It was used to wash or irrigate wounds and was also used for rehydration in a sort of reverse colonic irrigation via one's rectum (you can absorb a lot of water that way !).

"einsatz" doesnt make sense,

it would read (in english)

metal containter with" inset" as help irrigator inside

METALLKASTEN MIT einsatz ALS HILFSIRRIGATOR,DARIN

this doesnt make grammatical german

there is possibly a number missing between,

i.e.

einsatz (1) als hilfs irrigator

all equipment inside boxes, cases etc were given numbers einsatz 1, 2 3 etc etc

the truppnbestek 1935 had metal boxes inside each containing instruments etc, each box reffered to a number on the lid which corresponded to its contents

hope this helps

Hello again,

Sorry but that is what it says. 'Einsatzs' may have been given numbers if there were enough of them to create confusion (as in Haupt-, Sammel- and Truppenbesteck). It is interesting to note that the individual surgical instruments are numbered in Haupt- and Sammelbesteck but not in a Truppenbesteck (it being smaller).

Exact wording is '1 Metalkasten mit Einsatz als Hilfsirrigator darin' which roughly translated gives '1 Metal Box with SET for ('as') Irrigation Aid containing: ('in it')'.

I have attempted to add 2 pictures, one showing an example contents list (1938 Model Arzttasche) and the other showing part of the Irrigator Set. I believe the metal tube part ? screwed into the instrument container (located in the top of the Arzttasche) to provide the water/saline reservoir.

I would have to concur with m'learned friend - it does indeed say 'einsatz'.
