no one knows then? I dont have any collectors type books with the gen on such a thing or detailed enough photos to tell, so thought I'd ask those in the know.......

Hello funker50 As you say , it's impossible to tell from photos generally speaking - from the originals that I've seen , at least those that have retained their laces , they're leather , as we're most laces issued ( I believe ) until the late introduction of artificial materials .
As to colour , well , are you purchasing a repro pair ? Most originals vary in colour , all the way from light tan to almost black - and this has to do with the preparation of the leather , so you'd treat the leather laces in the same way , and generally speaking they'd appear the same colour as the boots .

I've got a pair of swiss boots, quite dark red/brown in colour, which need a smidge of reshaping if possible mind.....
