The story of her recovery is well known , the "promise" of a potential treasure on board or high ranking Nazi(s) being on board , none of which turned out to be the case.
Her poost recovery took her to the Histopreic Ships Museum at Birkenhead , when it closed its doors the site occupied by the U-Boat had been earmarked for development and her future was far from certain and it as highl;y likely that she would be acrspped.

In the interim she was taken over by Mersyferries who had her sectioned and taken across the Mersy to Woodside Quay , here she has been painted and become the central part of a small but well laid out Museum complex which tells of her operational career , her sinking , recovery and post war move to the Wirral.

Many had concerns about her being sectioned but in fairness this has been well done and she presents very well .

What is on display is but a fraction of that which was recovered with the boat but it does add greatly to the boat's presence.

The topside and tower are closed to the public and her upper deck is in poor condition but that apart she is in good order.
Full restoration , that would be brillant but does anyone know where we might come across say several millions which would be free for the taking ?
Several millions would certainly be £10 -15 millions to make a job of her

Excellent photos and thread JS, thanks for posting them.

Dad and I had intended to see U-534 in 2000 when we were in the UK, but at that time (and place) photography of anything associated with it was verboten.

But I have been thru U-995 at Laboe and that was fantastic experience.

U-995 is a place I want to visit at sometime in the not too distant future.
When you look at the size of this Type IX you would think "big boat" but internally she was a "small boat" and the Type VII would have been even smaller - the outer skin containing the pressure hull.

Justin the boat itself is an example of the complex nature of recovering and providing a viable future for any wartime wreck which is recovered - recovering is but one step , long term care and preservation is really what it has to be about.
(It would have been a utter shame if 534 had been forced into the arms of the scrap man.)

For ourselves this was a good day out , seeing helps put the past into context.
In the right circumstances she would have been a dangerous enemy , but as it turned out she and her kind were really more dangerous to her crew as technology and science had left them behind.

The Type IX seems like a large boat - but when you look inside the confines of the pressuer hull it is not large - like wise having seen the "Atlantic Class" boat at St.Nazaire (which is to all intents and purposes a Type XXI boat) - whioch is also a claustrophobic tin can , the VIIC boat must have been quite hellish - an enviroment which cannot have been much improved when supply at sea from the Milk Cows came on line.

If you are in Liverpool and have time to spare catch the ferry at the Liverbuilding and go across to woodside - she is worth seeing.
