The pendant from Sobibor story

Post by kiler »

Sad but interesting story:
A unique archaeological finding – a pendant with a name and a date of birth of a murdered in Sobibor girl from Amsterdam, it moved almost simultaneously many people in Poland and Holland.

It appears that 70 years after these tragic events we would like to know not only the transport lists and lists that show millions of murdered but also the fates of each of them. How they lived, what they did, what friends they had, what their characters were like. We want to know their history, even though it was short, like that of six-year-old Lea, not just look at them taking into account the last hours of their lives. 70 years is also the time which had to fly in order to ask questions about the destiny of the Dutch more important than some kind of shame and eagerness to forget "difficult” history. This is also the time when the saved "could” return to the places where their nearest died. The past enclosed in objects such as the pendant from Sobibor make that we ask new questions about homicide, about the fate, understanding and memory.
There is a really beautiful radio audition about it, that won Polish National History Prize, unfortunately in Polish, so I won`t give the link.

Here is the pendant itself:

I also found material in Dutch - maybe some Dutch Members will be interested:
