Re: Michael Gaissmair - Winter Training 2012 in Eulenberg
Michael Gaissmair Winter training, such a great event. Good people, good atmosphere and a very educative program. Learning skills that can be used troughout the re-enacting season. Making a fire with just wood helped me on a number of occasions trough the years. The variety of nationalities, the language barriers.. They don't matter when your in the same Gruppe and fighting a common enemy. As allways we aren't fighting a physical enemy, but the cold. This enhances comradeship, and gets rid of the "I hate those kevlar yankees" talk.
The cold is the common enemy. But why travel over 1500 km to go and sit in some forest with temperatures that make your face freeze? I think it's the adventure, comeradeship and atmosphere your in. People say I'm crazy when I tell them I went camping in Finland last year at tempereatures as low as -34. But then again; " Finnland ich vermisse Dich!"
A Zugfuhrer in discussion with 3 Gruppefuhrers. The Zugfuhrer was the "platoon" commander, wich had the task of giving orders to the "Gruppefuhrers". Gruppefuhrers had the task of leading their "Gruppe" into combat. The Zugfuhrer points out positions to be taken on the map. The Zugfuhrer was the one to give the Global order and the Gruppefuhrer was the man to pick the precise way to the target, or the way to accomplish the goal.
Zug - platoon consisting of a number of "Gruppen".
Gruppe - Squad, consiting of around 10 men.
A "Schwere MG", meaning a MG on a tripod, a so called "Lafette". Hiding heavy weapons is important in winter war. One of the most important things is getting rid of snow in front of the barrel. Leaving snow in front of your weapon, snow flys of with the bullet shooting. This means a easy to spot target. Then as another precaution of not being seen, with a few branches and some rope a camouflage is constructed. In winter warfare heavy weapons pay a important role. Whilst moving in the deep snow becomes hard, it is more easy to pick on targets. Especially with MG's.
With Russian weapons being more reliable in the extreme temperature then the German ones, some experienced soldiers pick Russian weapons above their k98's. Though against regulations, it was quite a common sight on the eastern front.
Obergrenadier Joachim, just being transferred he replaced the fallen MG-schutze. Whilst being young, he is a experienced soldier. Knowing what war is like he is happy to take the training in stead of being at the front. The night before he received a parcel from home containing gloves and socks his mother made. The little bag in his hand is the so called "Führergeschenk", a small satchel with hardkeks, sweets and ration coffee. This was usually reserved for Frontline troops but as most of them never reached the front they are handed out here.
Finnish army tents are used to shelter the troops at the times no training is given. The tents are equipped with a woodstove to keep the men on the inside from freezing. The tents have no floor or bottom sheet. The tents are isolated on the bottom by pine tree branches. This allso makes a great soft floor to sleep on. On top of that the zeltbahn and 2 woolen blankets is used to sleep.
This Unteroffizier uses his free time to sketch and write to his loved ones at home. With all of the Digital media people tend to forget how important the regular mail was back then. It was one of the major things keeping the morale up. Feldpost consisted of small parcels, envelopes or cards.
Hot chow! Gefreiter Damian Baumer enjoys his pea soup. "There is no meat in here klaus?!", "If you really want meat cut it off the frozen Russian outside, and cook it yourself" Klaus replies.
