Very good post James and right to the point . I have to agree with you fully on those points . The Normandy battle sites are still well worth a visit for those who have not been there .
I am sure if Wittmann was still alive he would have laughted at the title " The Black Baron ".

Re: Who was the Black Baron?
Justin I do think he and many like him ( German and Allied) would be more than a little bemused and perhaps embarrassed by titles like this and what some might attribute to them.
In towns and villages it is easier to find landmarks in relatively flat open country like that which Wittmann was killed on it takes time .
The Canadian cemetery which is close by is worth visiting.........
Last year I managed to finally get a copy of Mark Bando's book which details what is known about the death of Christian Tychsen , if time and opportunity present I might try and explore the lane way he died on......that is for later.

You see that bit of Wittmann's Tiger in that French blokes shed. That was cool.
Re: Who was the Black Baron?
That is what makes history tick.
Re: Who was the Black Baron?
A very intresting thread, im sorry i missed that program sounded worth
watching, as stated above i think in my opinion M.W's title "The Black Baron"
is a "Post-War media" invention, similar to other nick-names we have heard,
there will be a book out next with this title lol lol, anyway here are some pics
of the man himself for the benefit of any "newbies" or the "uninitiated" members
amongst our ranks.
Pipes.

This show is now repeating on Mil History Channel - its not bad when all is said and done although "The Black baron" does surface now and again.
