The round end seems to be part of the mount , the UZO - nice gear and the now "extinct" - rubber body for the smooth ocular Zeiss.
Looks like the photo was taken in safe home waters.

That's a MG-15 on the AA mount....which makes this photo very interesting since the MG-15 was primarily a Luftwaffe aircraft weapon.

I was looking through back issues of the German quarterly magazine "U-Boot in Focus" (No.4).
( Luftfahrtverlag Start) , and found the photo Cam had posted.
Ther caption reads "Two U-Bopats meet in the Kara sea , far from any cilivization during "Operation Wonderland II" in September 1943. In spite of this members of the crew do not let their guard down for a moment .The photo must have ben taken from U225 ( Obltz.z.S Harms) which had a war correspondent on board during the operation.
Operation Wonderland II began ion the late summer of 1943 . The operation involved Uboats 255,302,354,601,703,711 and 960.
The task was to scout the Kara Sea and The West Siberian Sea to the east for West bound convoys.
The well known series of photos taken of a Polar bear which had been shot and skinned on the deck of a U-Boat ame from one of the boats in this operation.
Attached a close up of the gun mount.
