The definitive reproduction wickelgamaschen post

Post by gewehrmonkey »

I have tried to sort through all of the posts in this section and get a straight answer.
Is there a source for reproduction wickelgamaschen? Is there a source for something close that can be correctly modified to be correct?
Please post information leading to the acquisition of these items!

Thanks,
Ron

Hessen Antique offers/offered Great War Steingrau and Feldgrau puttees. They're out of stock now, but maybe they could be converted?

British 1950s ones might be a good price/quality alternative. Straps need to be converted, though.

Ron, I am currently making a batch of "WICKIES" (completion date, Nov 2010). You and Zack are welcome to order a pair. The "stoff" used is a very fine, tight weave worsted wool, od green blanket material with a dark green cotton tape. According to Jim Poole from Papa Kiser's 5th Hoch battalion, the local tailors made wickies from whatever material was available. You can see my Jagers (Spencer & Tom) wearing them on the 98th website (see Camp Roberts, Sep 2010). Myself, I am wearing a pair of schipper fabrik "US" brown ones shortened to proper length. Just call me or email me and we can send them out when they are done! "Immer Weiter Machen!" Walt

Thank you, Walt. I replied via email. In six months, some new guy is gonna come along looking for puttees and we will have to do this all over again.
Can someone post pictures and dimensions of genuine wickelgamaschen so we can at least have some idea what we are looking for? All my searches turn up photos of them worn or rolled up, never just laid out to view.

Ron... from a previous post

"the type of cloth puttees warn by the Gebirgsjäger were 73x8cm with a 20 1/2 x 2 1/2 cm strap"

viewtopic.php?f=42&t=2226&hilit=Putties

BUT, I have a pair that are slightly shorter, they wrap around only 3 times...

I think you will really like the ones we are making....I got your message.. stay in touch!

I think it is difficult to find good reproduction Gebirgsjaeger Gamaschen, and the most alternatives are not so correctly. I have orginal Gamaschen and use them for reenactment. Her are a few fotos.

I have asked this question before, but how is the hook used? I was told that it hooks on to the boot laces, but the photo above makes me wonder about that.
Can anyone post any photos of the Gamaschen being fitted?
I'm keen to put the hooks on mine in the right position.
