Take a look at this - 139 photos tell the story of the recovery of a StuG IV, or at least the major part of it. Of particular interest is all the stuff that is still with it, and what good condition most of it is in...
One of the most interesting things to note, fellow armour hounds, is this particular vehicle obviously went to war in a red oxide primer finish, as the markings can clearly be seen painted directly on to this colour...
As to the top half..? Demolition by crew? Abandoned at a half repaired stage? An ammunition carrier? I personally don't think it's demolition as there is absolutely nothing left of the superstructure and main armament, plus what is left is rather 'neat' - which suggests it had been removed...?

http://www.lerenfort.fsnet.co.uk/page43N.htmThe top of the Stugs fighting compartment, it seems it is easier to dismantle the vehicle and recover the bits rather than attempt a full piece recovery.

Great story about the Stug!
At the end I had to laugh a bit because of the huge crowd going crazy and it needs the police to control them...is Robby Williams in town? No it is a WW2 german Stug.
Really funny.

Re: Salvage Squad - Polish branch!
Thanks for the update West Front - I didn't realise the bit I picked up was of the same StuG from the Lerenfort site! (I haven't been on that site for quite a while as I gave up when it stopped being updated...)
The photo story doesn't show the top section at all... I hadn't realised it had previously been removed by the salvagers - quite a feat to do that with the whole thing pretty much submerged in mud!
Quite a remarkable story anyway and I'm glad it has been restored to running condition
My only tiny criticism is the paint job they have chosen to do it in rather than restoring it to 'as found'... which would have been both unusual and completely authentic!
