Best LW/Fsj Padded Winter Parka's available

Post by Pietje »

Guys, it's cold outside and was wondering what are the best LW/Fsj Padded Winter Parka's available at this moment.
Have seen them at Spearhead (1st and 3rd pattern ?) ... Are they any good ? Other suggestions... ?

Thanks in advance

I use a grey parka set. Others in my unit use splinter sets. I had mine custom made from dawlong on ebay. The smallest sizes online were still too big for me. I'm a slim 20 year old 5'10. I can fit a wool sweater and my flieger bluse under mine and its cut for a 36 in chest.

From what I've heard, the spearhead parka suits hold up pretty well even in minus 20c....

That would depend on which you bought, the last FJ grey padded suit I had from Spearhead looked great but had no quilting inside the lining. However, the splinter parka I bought had a fair bit of quilting in it.

I wouldn't wear the grey one out on a windy day, let alone -20 degrees.

Thanks for you PM Sheikh Al Stranghi, stating that yours is perfectly satisfactory, as I said in my experience the grey FJ winter suit was barely padded. I will stand corrected with pleasure if someone has bought one of these very recently and found it be fully padded with quilting.

Well it would have be far easier if you had said that in the first place. Spearhead ebay listing used to carry a note on the grade of padding in the lining (do they still?). The FJ grey square ones used to be very thin. Since then I have always bought from Richard Underwood as I knew exactly what I was getting. Well Barry has stepped up the game again.

Thanks Darren

The way Spearheads FJ quilted suits are made, make it impossible to line the the jacket with padding. The design is fudermentally wrong and is a bodge between regular winter suits and photos. Bought one when they first came out. Complained . He said new patch was being made, but still the same old toot on the site.

Thanks Martin, I do remember you posting here when you first got it and being dissappointed.

I'm very interested to see if the quilting has been upgraded since. I checked out Spearheads ebay lisings and it only mentions heavy weight quilting on his Splinter parkas, no mention of the type of quilting used for any of the FJ Type1, Type 2, Type3.

It may just boil down to how cold you get, I personally found my FJ Type2 didn't keep the cold out when wearing a shirt, flieger and jumpsmock. Whereas a Mr Underwood one kept me warm. (that was on the same night before you ask :) )

Thanks Darren
