Some nice eispikels there :D

How many of us have wartime dated German ones I wonder? I for one do not. Mine is 1943 Swiss Army but it's good enough.

Fulpmes and Stubai are producers.

And the rest is "PR&marketing" issue ;)

I dont have Peter Aschenbrenner's bio in English on hand, in German here:

Hi Mario33,
Thanks for your reply. I'm familiar with Peter Aschenbrenner as a climber. Clearly his influence can be seen on climbing gear of the day.

My question was more towards the products offered by Stubai (now Stubai-Bergsport). My friend has a Stubai-made eispickel stamped as on the lower photo while mine is marked as on the upper photo. These are both images from online -- the upper from within this thread. My eispickel does not have any Waffenamt markings so not a true Gebirgsäger issue item. When was the "Aschenbrenner Führerpickel" produced -- pre-war, during or after?

With both these models side by side, I could not find any differences between them.

The stamping on mine is the same as this one from earlier in this thread:

I wrote to Stubai Bergsport a week or so ago and the reply received from Helmut Knoflach was partially inconclusive.

Helmut wrote that their old catalogs do not show the markings stamped in the axe heads. His opinion is that the "Aschenbrenner Führerpickel" model was likely produced first and the "Original Aschenbrenner" types coming later.

The two examples I referenced in my previous post both had the older style Stubai logo. I've subsequently seen a few "Original Aschenbrenner" Eispickels for sale which have the new style Stubai logo. I haven't found a "Führerpickel" with the new logo yet.

Sorry for the late answer to this post!Peter Aschenbrenner designed at the beginning of the 30's a new model of ice pick. the main diference was the form of the pointed part of the pick, in form of a elonged pyramid, to a better use.
There are a few variations on the same idea and that's why there is a "Führer" one and others.
In the early models, there is no "Made in Austria". Those are post war by sure.
The length of the picks can be quite different, even in a same period and dependet from the preferences ofthe alpinist.
As far as I know, Aschenbrenner didn't provide directly the army. But only a part of the GJ ice picks were originaly made for the army -this ones have in a very high % the Waffenamt marking. A lot of the Hochgebirgsjäger, NCO's and oficers had private purchased ones.

It would appear that both the "Führerpickel" and "Original Aschenbrenner" models were produced both before and after the war. I'd not previously seen an example but the attached photo clearly shows the postwar version of the Stubai logo on this Führerpickel.

Also of note is the fact that this postwar Führerpickel is substantially different in design than the pre-war/wartime models. Note the hole in the axe head just above the handle. Interesting that the model name didn't change.

This is mine.
It has only factory stamps but I think it's OK.

Hi everyone!

What do you think about my pickaxe? I think it is an civilian because of the branding.

Regards!

Grüß Di' Stephan,

You have a wonderful Eispickel....a civilian one from the famous Sporthaus Schuster in München...great markings.

I have a few items from Sporthaus Schuster also.
