Hi mate
The best thing to do is go down to homebase in the garden section and you can pick up a whole roll for about a fiver
But it is usually galvanised and will not rust, but if you want it for reenacting it is perfect cause im sure in 1944 in normandy u wudnt of had a helmet with 60 odd years of age on it.
But if the wire is a bit too thick
go to the soldering section of homebase, pick up some solder wire, although a bit shiny it can be dulled down
but it is perfect as you can bend and snap with hands and then unbend it and reuse it.
Just a fewtips

Hi
I find the bset thing to do for the thick wire is to search your local area for bits that have been left and so have gone rusty. I find bits everywhere, in fact I now keep a small hacksaw in the car in case I come across any :? Here is some I've put on helmets. However point well made about would the stuff have been rusty when it was put on the helmet originally. Also if your going to respray your helmet cut the wire and work it around the shell before you've sprayed it to get the corrcet fit. It can be a bugger to get on and can wreck any paint work you've spent ages to get right.

the wire for holding the chicken wire on is the post and wire stuff used for fencing suprise surprise!!

It is stiff and hard to bend into shape, a property that makes it ideal for holding chicken wire on, you can put a peice around the helemt just above where it flares out and use 2 or 3 smaller pieces as hooks to stop it sliding off the top

It's hard and in the states down right expensive to find the proper europeon twist chicken wire. Enough to cover 1 helmet sells for about $100 each at most reenactments. I personally find it more economical and sensable to use the improper twist chicken wire and just age it accordingly. Soak it in vinegar for a day, then spray it with hot salt water, slap some mud on it and you have chicken wire that has seen quite a bit of service. For 1/2 baskets use light guage bailing wire and use the same process to tarnish it. If you can justify $100 for a small grid of chicken wire, knock your socks off. I purchased a 25 x 2 feet roll of it for $4 and looks just as good unless you really study the twist. Just my two cents.

Ok approach with extreme caution!

Use the following to remove Galvy from wire.

Make your basket, but do not attach to the helmet.

Obtain container large enough to submerse the wire in.

Pour 1/2 gallon of cheap vinegar into container with wire

DO NOT BREATH GET AWAY! Allow reaction to calm down. AGAIN DO NOT BREATH!

THIS WILL SHED DAYS OFF YOUR LIFE BY THE SECOND.

In approx 15 to 30 min the vinegar will strip the galvy down to bare metal.

Remove wire and wash in warm soapy water immediately. If you want a aged appearance allow the wire to rust for a couple of days, and then apply a generous coat of penetrating oil!

I learned this method from my friends who do medieval re-enacting, and they use this to remove the gavly from maille shirts.
