I find it sad that they are going to try one of the former camp guards who has been helpfull to researchers etc.. and also admits openly that they were wrong, cant remember his name but he was in charge of the foreign currency at the camp, and features on the bbc series on the camp.

It's Oskar Groening - the bloke who this thread is all about.johankreig wrote:I find it sad that they are going to try one of the former camp guards who has been helpfull to researchers etc.. and also admits openly that they were wrong, cant remember his name but he was in charge of the foreign currency at the camp, and features on the bbc series on the camp.
Have to say I feel a wee bit sorry for the guy. Having been ordered transferred there and not liking it very much, the only way out was to apply for another transfer to a combat unit, which is exactly what he did. Since then, he has constantly spoken up against Holocaust deniers, has provided unvarnished testimony as to the brutality of those places and has admitted moral guilt for being part of the Nazi regime.
I have always thought that changing a law and then retrospectively prosecuting someone for breaking it is a bit daft, but if Germany wants to apply the "accessory to" crime so broadly, then I guess they will be bringing similar prosecutions against the train drivers who drove the transports and the workers in the civilian firms who provided supplies for the camps.

Middle ranking Gestapo personally carried out beatings in police stations, many resulting in death. These individuals often escaped punishment altogether, or slipped through, with letters of reference, and went on to serve in Lander Justice Ministries, rising to high office, and collecting their pensions.

With reference to the topic: here you can find some eyewitness accounts of Polish prisoners of Nazi-German death camps (there are also recordings of their voices with translations):

Today court gathered for the first time. I hope Mr Tendera will make it to the trial`s end and will be granted justice.
Epilogue to this case:
German public television station ZDF called the German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Majdanek as „Polish death camps”. For this action ZDF was sued by former Auschwitz prisoner Karol Tendera and lost that case in court. The court ordered ZDF to publish an apology on their main page and to leave it visible for 30 days.
For some reason ZDF published them very discreetly, at the very bottom of their website in the box "Dock / Wissen" with the title „Karol Tenders Apology.” Only when you click on that title, you can see the content of the apology.
For this reason we have decided that we should show ZDF what we think about their action.
