Advice Please - UK Road Registration of DKW NZ250

Post by Stefan1944 »

Kameraden

I'm in process of UK Road Registering a restored DKW NZ250 (1939) as a Historic Motorcycle and would appreciate any advice and recommendations regarding which Marque Specialist I should use to provide the "Letter of Conformity" authentication required by DVLA.

I'm aware both VMCC and CZ motorcycle clubs offer this service but unsure which to use.

Therefore, all advice and recommendations would be much appreciated.

The DKW restoration is now complete with bike running and I'm hoping to take for her initial MOT in the next few weeks, which I believe is a UK registration requirement.

If of interest I'll also post some pictures and hope to have the registration process completed in time for this year's re-enacting season....

Just to add I do have a Bill of Sale and the DKW has a fitted period Typenschild ID Plate with year and frame number which matches the stamped frame number. Also the frame and engine numbers are both on the DKW NZ database for the correct year and model.

Vielen dank....

Stefan well done on your acquisition, I have left a message with a good mate of mine, who currently has a few wartime krads, including a DKW nz 250, bmw r75 and zundapp ks 750 some 'on the road' and a few dkw rt 125s , and a few ex military VW camper vans. i'm sure he will point you in the right direction, when he gets back to me

Stefan - best way is not to look at it as an import... look at it as re-registering a vehicle that may have already been registered in the UK, but of which you have no record of it's previous registration.
The bike is a "barn find" in the UK.
All you should need is proof of year of manufacturing, usually in the form of a letter from the owners club. The listed on on the DVLA looks to be...

How I did mine, removes all the pissing about with import balls. All you want is an "age-related registration number"

Having recently gone through the process with the newly constituted "agency" DVLA, you need to use someone from their list. I would recommend Tony Lawrence from IMPS. don't be phased about the HMRC thing they are really helpful and you get a phone number which to my utter amazement connects to the person who handles the forms. Don't send DVLA photo copies.

Kameraden, danke for your replies...

Alas, the BMW R12 restoration was taking much too long so I decided to cancel the order and bought the DKW NZ instead....

I'm still progressing the DKW UK registration and am very grateful for the advice already provided. I've made contact with the organisations suggested and todate the VMCC are the only ones to have responded positively with offer of Age Related Plate assistance so I will probably go with them.

Meanwhile, the DKW is a non-runner as the 6v ignition coil and rectifier / regulator have burned out so would need to push it round any events...

To keep on topic I'll create a new separate post requesting advice about the ignition issues and whether to stay 6v or upgrade to 12v.... :?:

Vielen dank... Stefan

Kameraden, a quick update on my DKW Nz UK registration project and following all your advice have some positive progress to report....

Finally decided to join the VMCC and use their Manufacture Date and Marque Conformity service as required by the DVLA, as they were very helpful and easily contactable for support by telephone and email. I submitted my completed application form and photos by email and they promptly confirmed receipt and would pass on to their DKW marque expert for the final validation before issuing the letter of conformity required by DVLA.

Meanwhile, I now had the dreaded HMRC NOVA procedure to deal with, which having read about lots of problems with it I was abit worried and anticipated being stung with a large bill for VAT import charges!!!

Anyway, after partly competing a paper NOVA form I thought "sod it" I'll have a go at the online procedure as I was already registered with a HMRC portal account. Took me about 10-15mins to transfer data from the paper form to the online form and finally press the submit button.

Much to my relief within "nano" seconds I got a message to confirm successful form submission and on scrolling down the form noticed a financial summary table with the VAT owing as "0".... Wow, double take, re-read three times over and yes it was true - no VAT to pay :D

So, from my experience the HMRC NOVA online process for imported historic vehicles is now a very efficient service and not to be feared, especially for EU imports.

I'm now just waiting for the VMCC "letter of conformity" to submit to DVLA then hopefully I should be able to get UK registration.

Hope of interest and will keep you all posted.... :D
