Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline
Today I went to local paint shop AM panels and paints . Asked them to make one aerosol RAL: 6006 Field grey matt Asked me twice pulling his face field grey ? after couple of minutes which he spent in his magic room and I said yes is something between dark green and black , and he says o.k. After 20 min. he came out and passed me bomb with sticker saying RAL: 6006 olive green So I'm pretty confused and now lads I need your opinions is this one correct or not ??? Thanks

Most paint dealers can't pull off the matte texture, but 6006 is correct. It's green with a bit of a greyish undertone in it. But definitely green.

That's what I found Today I think we are all wrong
Mit der Verfügung vom 27.1.1940 wurde der Helm mattfeldgrau angestrichen. Mit der neun Verfügung vom 1.3.1940 wurde der Helm mattschiefgrau angestrichen

That's the normal iron oxide-mixed paint. The early 1940 pattern field grey helmets were smooth.

What about the use of RAL 7018 Scheifergrau?
Excerpts from the Army report 1940, No. 428
For camouflage reasons the steel helmets of the army receive a slate grey-matt , with a rough texture painting on the outside…
The black - white - red national-shield is not longer in use
Perhaps someone with better German than I could translate the whole?

Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline
On the topic of helmet colours: does anyone know the RAL codes for the WW1 paint schemes used on the M16's? I have been struggling to find a definitive answer on the matter, with paints ranging from field grey to light grey to dark grey / verging on black. Would a slate grey (RAL 7015) be acceptable?
(I know this forum is more for WW2 enthusiasts, so I apologize in advance if this is some major faux pas)

I went with RAL 7009 - though the first batch seems to be VERY glossy - going back this week to get another version made up using the RAL colour code as a base, but they said they'll mix it up with a different base formula that is matte-based...
I've got to try to work out the colour for the Finnish greens too - someone I read said AppleGreen or MossGreen?
(Need to trawl through the notes again as the PC has been crashing more than a Malaysian Airliner lately & I've lost loads of browsing history...)
Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline
Thanks, I must have missed that part... *face-palm*
However, the text seems to indicate that the 1930's re-issue of the M16/18 was painted in RAL 7009 - whereas I am more interested in the colour they would have been at time of issue in 1916-18? Was that also 7009?
