Rank badges for camouflage clothing

Post by Urwaldjaeger »

I bought a replica from Epic Militaria and it is a kind of "green-blueish" thing. Did'nt look like that on the E-bay photo...
I´m afraid that this repro is not in the right colour.
Is there anyone who knows about the original "green" colour of german rank badges for camouflage clothing.
And how was it mounted on camouflage smocks and parkas?
On both sleves or just one?
Should the edges of the black bottom fabric be foulded when attached to the clothing?
This rank badges are quite seldom shown on WWII photos.
Is there anyone who have some pics with these badges in use?

They were introduced in 1942 to be worn 10cm below the sleeve seam or same position on items without seam
should be a light green colour (up to Oberst then in gold) with black border

to be worn on items without sholder boards ie camo clothing ,shirts, winter camo, tropical shirts, wind jackets, etc
though photos show the SS rarely worn them on smocks and as you state there
is not much photo evedence to say they were widely used

One of the reasons that the SS did not have them on the tarnjaket was the fact that you could see the wearers rank on the coller patch and here is the orders for Dot uniform
99.Camouflaged drill uniform
To utillise front-line experience ,a camouflaged drill uniform consisting of
Drill blouse........Article No.B/40
Drill trousers......Article No.B/171
is introduced as a camouflage and working uniform.
On those drill blouses in the same cut as the cloth field blouse, the rank badges for items of clothing without shoulder straps (according to V.Bl.d.W.-ss.,Nr4 15 February 1943 Ziff.63.) are to be worn 0.5 cm under national emblem
Collar patches are not to be worn
Existing types of drill uniform as well as the camouflage jacket are to be discontinued.Existing stocks may be used up

Thank you very much Stefan!
Good info.
I still wonder a bit about the real original colour.
There are some supposed originals in the market and the
seem to have the green-blue colour more than the olive.
Do you think that´s correct?

Rank patches, whilst occasionally worn on the dot 44 uniforms, etc, were never worn on a smock. The reason being that the tunic collars were supposed to be exposed through the smock 'neck' and this would have revealed the wearer's rank instead.

Rank patches on dot 44 clothing were more commonly worn by officers, as opposed to NCO ranks, but ranks below Uscha invariably never wore them at all.

You are right when you say never worn on smocks "officialy" yes but they did use them on very rare
ocasions I have see film footage in Normandy of SS smocks with them and also in odd photos

but this was not standard by a long way and yes the idear was rank could be seen on the collar patch

Old topic but why start a new one? Has anyone seen pictures of the rank badge in use on lower ranks (ie. Unteroffizier) on a winter parka? Only pics I have seen are officers wearing them.

Yes, I know what kind of badge should be worn, but I haven't seen any picture evidence that would show it was widely used. Only pictures of officers using the badges.

The late Gert Krassner, RIP, expressed surprise at one particular event when he saw a number of us wearing the Unterscharfuhrer single camo stripe when I was a member of the SBG. He told me that in his experience he never saw them being worn (it was an honest comment from someone 'who was there.')

I hope that helps?
