Czech Hedgehogs
We're in the process of building props for our Il Giogo Pass event. Here are some pics of a hedgehog constructed from plywood and MDF to plans that some other kind soul put together
http://users.skynet.be/jeeper/hedgehog.pdf
They are bolted together in three sections for easier transportation
This one is 2/3 size as B&Q don't sell 7 foot long sheets of ply. One sheet of 1800 x 600 x 6mm ply will make exactly three beams this way and we need a load of them so accuracy has been sacrificed for budget in this instance. I used their free timber cutting service
Ply is glued screwed into timber struts for strength and end caps are glued on
Screws are countersunk, filled and sanded
Reinforcing plate is cut from MDF. Polystyrene balls from a craft shop are used to make rivet heads
Primed
Beams are sprayed with matt brown paint, sprinkled with dry sand and resprayed. Bright orange spray paint is lightly dusted over giving a corroded, rusty look to the beams
Assembled
The milky colour is a wash of matt varnish that hasn't quite dried. I wanted to get rid of the slight sparkle that the sand was giving in bright sunlight
Barbed wire is green garden wire with barbs made of speaker cable and painted up

Good work!
I remember seeing a German group (forget which now) a few years back making these and painting the final coat in water based paint mixed with iron filings - so that real rust would form on the surface....
You've got a good effect going with just paint though..

To write the words of a comrade:
How cool is that?!
Very good work ... and thanks for the suggestion.
Cheers Ingo
P.S. I had to say today that sisal is not really suitable for networks ^ ^

Re: Czech Hedgehogs
Excellent work here, look very robust and some good ideas on increasing the 'ageing' effect of the props.
We made about 6 for last years Duncannon show and found they do add to the visual effect on the battlefield. Need a bit of TLC when dismantled as 'bits and bolts' tend to 'go missing'. Couple of photos attached.
Thanks for the post.

Great Job! Any chance of posting the measurements/demensions so we can make up a few?

Measurements for the full size version are in the PDF link on the first post.
"Stop that!!! Careful with my J-J!"
Re: Czech Hedgehogs
We used the same dimensions as the OP above indicates and made a 2/3rd size as initially we the same problem getting 7' ply. We found these dimensions work well and 'hedgehogs' are easily transported. The addition of a supporting strut is a good idea as we found that screws came loose when a simple 'butt' joint was used.mauser98 wrote:Great Job! We later sourced 8' sheets and made two in the the longer size, more effective in wide areas but akward to store and move by transport.
Hope this helps.
