Re: Steinnuß Buttons
Hey Chris,
I have some "Steinnuss" buttons. But they are all a little bit bigger (15mm) than the orignal cap buttons.
Later I can post some pictures of them!
Regards!
Stephan

From the original Bergmützen I've been able to personally inspect (only a few), I believe the steinnuß buttons are larger than the pebbled aluminum buttons. I think pebbled buttons on Heer M-43 caps are 13mm. The steinnuß buttons appear larger than these.
A technical sidenote: Buttons actually have their own sizing system called "Ligne". It orginates back in the 1800s and has been the standard unit of measure since that time. It does not readily convert to metric sizes as the original standard was set up as 1-inch = 40 Lignes (40L). Obviously 1-inch = 2.54 cm so "Ligne" sizes often yield metric sizes that are often not whole numbers -- e.g. 20L = 0.5 inches but also 12.7mm (often referred to as 13mm buttons as used on M-43 caps).
Re: Steinnuß Buttons
Here are buttons from an early cap (not mine, unfortunately). I can't find the credit for the photo at the moment but will add it later. A stunning cap. I'm very envious of those who've managed to acquire pre-war and early-war examples. Re: Steinnuß Buttons
I decided to add some Edelweiß buttons to my Bergmütze. I don't think this was an overly common practice but I have seen enough photos to also believe that it wasn't a rare occurence, either. Several different styles can be seen.
Also, if anyone is interested, I've made my own cap buttons from some bits of hardwood I had in my cellar. They were actually more difficult to make than I first thought!

Chris, thanks for pictures of original steinnuß buttons!
I like your Bergmütze with Edelweiß buttons.
Well done for handmaid hardwood buttons... look very good!

Re: Steinnuß Buttons
I think there was a fair amount of variation with the steinnuß buttons. The photo I posted is from an early cap -- ~1939/40 -- when quality of available materials was still fairly high. My backup drive crashed and is out being recovered. When I get it back, I will post an assortment of close-ups of the various steinnuß buttons I've seen. For the most part, it's just variations in color. The basic shape of the buttons appears pretty consistent.
As for the Edelweiß buttons, I think they look pretty good. I purchased small lots of several different styles. I believe they were originally for traditional alpine apparel.

Re: Steinnuß Buttons
I have some of these buttons. Certainly the correct size and made from the correct material. Most of the original caps I have seen have buttons that are a light brown color. The colors are subject to interpretation due to the different lighting conditions for each of the photos.
I'd still like to see a known original button -- specifically the profile and the back.
Here is a comparison photo showing original caps.
