Post by JONV1969 »

Hello there. My question is this : Can someone please tell me, in the photo I have included, what the bags across these fine mens' chests are ?

I don't think it's a FJ gas mask bag.

I have found similar images of Belgian, Soviet and the U.S. M1A2 Gas Mask carrier - which was mostly for training purposes. None are anywhere near as elongated and or so holster-shaped. Interesting !

The greatest of photos for detail, but a close match in terms of a gasmask with breathing tube and filter worn low down - possibly an Austrian gas mask.

It's a gasmask, but not a Belgian one or the FJ one. probable some gasmask of an other occupied country. in those days every non combat or non frontline group got captured gear and weapons. Just the same with collaborating paramilitary groups in the occupied terretories.

Looks suspiciously like an Austrian gas mask. Early 20s pattern I think. It was designed so that when worn the filter was slung to the left side of the body - the filter and hose then didn't become entangles with the rifle when used.

It looks to be the Gasmakse 24; a Reichswehr model that came in two configurations, the one shown as above in the photos and one which was issued in a carrier very similar to the SBR types issued by Britain and USA. These were in production up until at least 1932. These were issued mainly to training and garrison units according to Angolia/Schlicht.
