Or me!
They would not have been strictly "panzer Lehr" medics as they would have belonged to an attatched medical unit - and as such would have looked generally like any other WH medic.

Re: panzer lehr medic help
Kit wise, you would need two brown pouches that clip to the front of your belt, a red cross armband, large waterbottle with carry strap and depending on markings for your helmet, you really are free to choose, full white stahlhelm with red cross on top, or the smaller white circles with the red cross emblem.
This is the basic kit to get you going.
SOF sells medic pouches for around 50 quid each, but you get loads of kit in them.
Lastly don't forget to sew on your specialists badge, the entwined serpent!
Good luck with the portrayal

Re: panzer lehr medic help
The white stahlhelm with red cross is a bone of much contention.
There is a school of thought saying it is only seen in photographic evidence where Sanitaeter are in captivity and still performing a function. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting it was a not very widespread practice. There is further evidence suggesting it was NOT done on the Ostfront as it merely gave Soviet snipers etc an aiming mark! (Geneva Convention being out of the window on all sides!)
Gott Mit Uns has done a lot of work researching this area and Das Medic has long given what is considered the best portrayal of a field medic around - Das Medic DOES wear a white stahlhelm - GMU doesn't/didn't he carried a white painted gasmaskentrager. - Do a little digging and reading - then put together what you come up with as the best, and most appropriate solution - Perhaps take three or four good photos (Bundesarchiv is online now) and meld them into one accurate portrayal.
Looking forwards to seeing another Sani on the field!

Hey Paul
Thanks very much for the compliments!
Nick - you certainly do have a good impression going on.
As a note - after a while I decided to drop the painted gasmask as it wasnt very common (another bone of contention) and went for the "average" look. I think it suited me better as the white canister made my fat arse look big

Hate ro resurrect an old threat but I'd rather not clutter the forum with a new one. What is Das Medic wearing? It looks tropical, I know tropical uniforms were used in other places besides North Africa but would it be "period" to wear it else where? Or am I off the mark?
One more question, I've been beating myself silly trying to find those Red Cross Bibs, anybody have any suggestions?

Herr Doktor looking at the photo I think that our dear Das Medic is doing a Luftwaffe Madic or FJ blue bread bag gives it away the Luft and FJ operated in tropical areas so its ok For euprope or Russia you would need HBT type uniform in the hot summer months .see belowHerr Doktor wrote:Hate ro resurrect an old threat but I'd rather not clutter the forum with a new one. Re: panzer lehr medic help
Red cross bibs were rarely worn. Go with an armband and youl be cooking on gas
Re: panzer lehr medic help
Just ask yourself, why would a regular infantry medic (like the krankentrager) in the frontlines wear all kinds of big red crosses to show himself*, while the rest of that unit is full in camouflage so they won't be spot. He would gave away the whole unit. In my opinion it is best to only wear one armband.

The German Sanitater would not be at the front in a combat patrol but nestling behind the formation, re-enactments enhance what the Sani would do and bring them in with the rest of the unit portrayal to give the public a good all round image of the varying elements that make up the unit.
I agree why would a Sani wear such distinctive markings? However as Paul has already touched on, varying theatres of war called for different measures and how the opposing forces viewed the Geneva convention. The German army deployed more medical personnel then any other fighting nation during WW2, but the odd thing is that there was not a set regulation in the 'field' once deployed on colourings, markings etc, Das Medic has highlighted an excellent web site earlier on in this thread.
I portray a Sani on the front line and an arm band and flag to let the opposing force know you are a non-combatant is enough, or a vest or whatever combination you feel is correct for the battle you are about to re-enact?
Happy to send you pics of how I have portrayed a Sani over the years and I know Tom is also a good source of info. (Das Medic not forgotten you!)
In fact Tom when are you selling me that kit we spoke about!!!

Re: panzer lehr medic help
thanks for that stu.
thats it ,
whatever rules or regs for any uniform, formation or whatever always goes to rat shi£ once in battle,
i was watching the d-day 65 the other week and there was footage from a us cameraman in colour from the normandy landings to berlin, the uniform variations, colours etc were astounding
thre was every shade of green from black to forest.
medics seen in this film wore anything to distinguish themselves fom bed sheets to vest to armbands
like you say it is the theater of war, time and operation that dictates what would be worn or reasonable in use.
hey stu can we addour little group to your new venture.
i can link your website on ours too
