the ones i bought from RAU 2 year ago has kept the rain out plenty of times.

If you do have problems, just use that water proof spray

There was a time pre-Sturm when RAU sold an expensive repro and original splinter zelts. If the repro were not SMW I'm not sure what they would be.
He still sells originals.

I traded for a Sturm repro just a couple weeks ago. IMHO its not that bad, the two sides are spring and fall shade, and it has three hole buttons. However, the grommets are larger than the originals and the fabric is a little thinner than originals. It seems to be better than the replicas from Sturms older production. There are no exposed seams as on the ones I have observed in the past. Overall, I would say that it is good for field use and even LH displays.

I threw mine in the washer to give it a used appearance.

The trick with zelts is not to touch (or have anything else touching) the inside when the fabric is wet. The fibres swell and 'seal' the surface unless something comes into contact with the inside in which case it kind of 'wicks' through.

We've all had rucksacks and pillows that have been touching the inside of a zelt tent in the rain and end up wet through although the zelt itself remains waterproof!

(At Mereworth once a colleague and I buttoned two single zelt sections together and tied the resulting large diamond shape to saplings like an awning and shared the space in a shallow scrape underneath... we stayed more or less dry whereas those who had wrapped themselves in their single zelt sections were soaked through!)
