Polizei Helmets

Post by Slobo »

Did the Polizei and Gendarmerie retain both helmet decals up to the end of the war (or into the late war), unlike Whermacht and WSS which did not?

According to Ludwig Baer's book,The history of the german helmet 1916-1945,the police combat helmets were issued with double decals right up until the end of the war. After November 1943 many of the helmets issued to police came with no decals at all. When decals were available, even up until 1945,both decals were worn. The eagle was never worn without the party sheild.

Thanks for the prompt and conclusive reply. One more question: since Gendarmerie units typically wore brown leather equipment (e.g. boots and belts) before and throughout the war, is it correct to assume that their helmets "typically" would have had brown leather chinstraps instead of black like everyone else accept the Luftwaffe?

My ref., doe's not state colour of chin strap,it goe's on to say that Rural Police(Gendarmerie),under the auspices of the Schutzpolitzei, wore the same insignia on their green painted helmets, but to a much more limited extent. It states most of their helmets, when issued at all, came with out decals of any sort.I hope this has been of help,I can only assume the chin strap would be brown.

I would go with a brown leather chinstrap for Politzei. Helmets came issued with straps in natural brown, and were worn rough side out. The military blackened the rough side with lederfett. If the Politzei were keeping the rest of their leatherwork brown, I can't see any reason that they'd blacken their helmet straps.
