Removing helmet liner

Post by Sean »

Ok, not wanting to make a complete balls up and break something in the process.......... how do I go about removing a helmet liner from a shell? It certainly does not look as straightforward as the FJ liner.

Carefully straighten the liner pins and push out,the liner then comes out.Putting it back is the 'pig',when you bend the clips back,I use flat nosed pliers, but it never seems as tight as before.

Thanks for that, I just wanted to get some clarity on the job before I started making a hash of things.

Thats is correct from BF/Sean. When re-inserting the pins start from the rear one and make sure you get the pins as straight as possible before re-inserting as it makes slipping the washer over easier. Then use a block of wood approx 1.5 to 2cm wide to hold open the liner springs. this allows you to easily apply pressure from the outside of the pin whilst bending the pins over using the pliars although i actually use a wide screwdriver to start the bend and then another screwdriver to press flat against the washer and then it should be nice and tight - oh and then remove the wood!!!

Getting the liner out is the simple part-getting it back in is an absolute nightmare and after doing 2 i have vowed NEVER to do it again seeing as i have a short fuse

Never managed to get the pins tight enough no matter what i tried and seems you need about 4 pairs of hands to be able to do it properly :( :(

Its not that bad! See above post you just need one or 2 blocks of wood (1.5 to 2 cm wide), to wedge the springs and liner open and then you have 2 hands to work with!

Sounds interesting,i do have a very very nice M42 with a shitty liner so if i can get a decent liner for a size 64 shell thats not too expensive i just might give it a go with the blocks of wood

Thanks for the tip.

Tried it the other night with two helmets and it was easier than I thought!! Putting them back was no problem either.
