GD shoulder board questions

Post by Feldjager »

2 quick questions chaps... does anyone know when the Wachtruppe/Wachregiment Berlin stopped using the gothic 'W' cypher on their shoulder boards and started using the 'GD' letters?

Also, did the members of the GD who were recruited via the Döberlitz training battalions have a gothic 'L' on their shoulder boards until they were finally accepted into the GD (and, one presumes, used the normal 'GD' cypher')? I know the gothic 'L' cypher was used by a few different units.

right then
the gothic "w" on the shoulder boards for the watch regiment was used throughout the war.
most nco's who were serving with GD were expected to do a "tour" with the watch regiment (usually 6 months) and for this period wore the shoulder board with the "w" along with the GD cufftitle
as for the "L" i am not sure as i cannot find any reference to it.
i know the GD boards and cufftitle were not issued until a recruit had finished his basic training.
i would assume that if a recruit had come from a training battalion then possibly the "L" would be used until the GD boards were issued.
however from fairly on (40 or 41) GD had its own training and replacement battalion so this would suggest no use of the "L"
hope this helps Dave :D
