General Hasso Von Manteuffel uniform questions

Post by peiper1944 »

Iam putting together a General Manteuffel portrayal and just need some info/pictures,
i have found a few pics but need a full front pic of uniform and how decorations were
worn etc, i know he wore the Grossdeutchland cufftitle as well as the Afrika cufftitle
on his General's M36 field grey tunic, was the GD title the normal gothic type or the
sutterlin script type as from pics you cannot tell ??, also a pic of his medal ribbons would
help as on most pics you cannot distinguish them ??

Here is a list of decorations i have so far: Knight Cross/oakleaves/swords/diamonds, WW1-
EK 1, WW1-EK 2, WW2-EK 1 bar, WW2-EK 2 bar, Austrian Merit Cross, Bavarian Merit
Cross, War Merit Cross, Silver Panzer Badge and Silver Wound badge.

Here's a few pics ive found, as said any more detailed ones would be appreciated

Cheers for that mate, i saw that pic, there is slight differences over what awards he
was awarded or worn, must do some more research, also thanks Brigadefuhrer on the
panzer pic, i will post some pics of my completed tunic when finished, as well as the
normal WW2 ribbons which are easilly sourced, the colours of the WW1 ribbons which
Manteuffel was awarded seem to vary according to different sources?

For instance on repro medal sites it appears that the one ribbon shown is for a Bavarian
merit cross first class where as Manteuffel was awarded the 3rd class so there is a
difference in colours, also some sources say he was awarded the Hindenburg medal others
do not ?, here are the few WW1 medals/ribbons pics i have found which apparantly
Manteuffel was awarded:

It's the third pattern cuff title, Sütterlin script on a black background. Be wary of Epic and their fantasy green backed ones ;)

Cheers for that Walther and Brigadefuhrer, it appears Manteuffel wore both varieties of GD
cufftitle the gothic style and the type in sutterlin judging from ref pics, in black of course lol

I have started ordering the bits, the tunic and trousers are on their way also i have
sourced a genuine WW1 ribbon bar comprising the EK 1, Austrian merit Cross 3rd class,
Bavarian merit cross 3rd class and Hindenburg Cross with swords, it is on its way just need
to add the WW2 ribbons when it arrives,... pics below of tunic/ trousers from stock photo,
these are from a dealer off ebay and made from authentic tricot not gaberdine material

Piped generals tunic from gavin militaria,I have one myself,Union militaria do an unpiped generals tunic bit more expensive than Gavin, but you do get most of the insignia apart from the eagle.

Most types of tunics could be seen at the front. If you notice that for combat Manteuffel is wearing an o/r M36 with generals insignia.

Yes saw those Brigadefuhrer but noticed they are made from gaberdine not tricot
also the insignia that comes with them looks a bit low quality imho thats why i bought a
blank tunic to act as a "blank canvas" if you like that way i can choose my own insignia,
which funnilly enough arrived today after ordering only yesterday morning so fair play epic
lol, i will add some pics later so you can judge for yourself but bare with me as iam using
the phone to send this

And yes Halle i will be portraying Manteuffel in one of his more better uniforms rather than
a combat uniform, anyone could do that lol, i thought i would do something with a bit of
class  i already have officer combat uniforms.

Cheers Pipes

Its what ever you are happy with.Union describe thier material as Tricot/gaberdine(gaberdine is a wool twill). As for the insignia it is very good,in the photo's the Gavin tunic is on the bottom and a Union waffenrock on top.The Gavin tunic has Epic collar tabs (And Epic stock a lot Union products)Anyway I look forward to how it turns out.John

Fair play john i thought you were referring to those tunics by the ebay company "RZM
Militaria" he also goes by the name of "militaria lee", his tunics come with insignia but look
a bit shabby imho almost like gold coloured thread rather than gold wire and their tunics
seem to be a flat gabardine material

 Its the same company, its thier ebay shop,my waffenrock came from them and I've just ordered a M27 tunic but made to measure this time from the main site(fingers crossed)normally I just order a size medium.I think the tricot looks finer in thier photo's,but the jacket feels slightly heavier than the Gavin one.
What cap are you going for?Manteuffel favored a 'crusher'with soft leather peak,Erel or splash the cash and get a nice Doe skin top Janke.

Yes ive been looking at caps, he wears the General's type crusher with embroidered insignia in combat agreed, ive been studing pics but he also wore the stiff peak type but without gold chinstrap for some reason also with a mixture of embroidered cockade and metal eagle so i will probably go for an Erel type but swap the insignia round and take off the chinstrap as the repro General crusher seems hard to find tbh, Militaria Net seem to do
some half decent stiff peak Erel type caps if i remember
