I've not seen more than 3 photos with a windjacke sporting an edelweiss sleeve patch..
But several of my GJ books state that they did wear them. How common was an Edel sleeve patch on a windjacket!

To my knowledge, often enough to see that on pictures. I would say, it would be particularly accurate for an officer or a seasoned veteran (NCO) to wear what they want to.
