Hi Glenn,

No the coloured flannel shirts as in the pics below; I assume they are civilian winter weight shirts but they seem VERY common in pics.

Try the sutlers stores.www.sutlers.co.uk
They specialise in American civil war uniforms, but they have check shirts in their western/civillian section.

Hello Jägers !

Everythings is going good untill now for this first official trip. I got a positive feedback from the authorities for this session 2009. We are five participants (which is the maximum for this year), and I keep working on this project. However, I will only be able to give you relevant news once in France :P (...I will say goodbye to Sweden that is a great country but too flat for me )

I hope the weather will be with us :!:

After different requests from some of you, questions about the nature of this event were asked. Thus, here is one of my reply for everybody that could be interested by such trips. You're still welcome to contact me if you need more info.
In terms of stuff requirements, we can do a distinction between the individual equipments and uniforms, AND the collective equipment.

To an individual level, our project (2009-2010) is based on a pre-war impression which deals with the uniform regulations from April to September 1939. So each participant should fit these uniform regulations. From the individual equipment side, each participant needs only 1 pick-axe and couple of crampons (military or civilan).

To a collective level, for this first edition 2009, I'm in charge of the climbing equipment, of which the necessary ropes for 5 people. However, Albert from Spain helps me also on this point. The needs in climbing equipments for 2010 will depend to the numbers of participants, maybe I'm going to need help on this point.

Concerning the level of difficulties, I can say "it depends" ! It depends first of the number of participants: I'm able to lead maximum 4 people in high mountain, if we are more than 5 I take a risk. Thus, I need to cut the rope group and another participant, with sufficient experience and technique, will lead a second rope group while I lead the first. My purpose is not to take unnecessary risks. Secondly, it depends to the physical conditions of participants and their level in mountain (knowledge and technique). Finally it depends to the natural conditions (snow and rock conditions), plan deviations can be important in mountain, and often, the planned trip can be changed because of weather.

In some words, by going in high-mountain, the objective of this project is not to do "family hiking" trips BUT high-mountain trips such as gebirgsjägers could know in 1938-1939. According to the number of participants, theirs physical capabilities and the natural conditions, the trip can be adapted in order to limit a maximum risk. Risk is an important thing that participants need to be aware: the best deep planning can only reduce the risk level without deleting it.

However, taking in account these considerations it is evident that we will do more interesting trip (and reaching a summit over 4000m/alt, what is the objective for 2010) with a small team of which participants are well lead and in good conditions. Then, we could realize in 2010 more than one trip/event in order to welcome all reenactors interested. It is a possibility, but before any hope I need to discuss with the local authorities.
Best regards,
:D :D :D

Hello,

Thank you very much Albert for having put some info about this project :D

Keep in touch for 2010 Obergefreiter Hansch

Today... I left my car this morning at 3 a.m. for a 6 hours climbing/hiking up and 3h30 hours to go down. I went to check the rock conditions and the Glacier. Some difficulties to reach the Glacier but possible. I hope the participants love rocks  there were many rock fallings on the Glacier. There is few snow, I hoped more snow  ... but the landscape is great, the place is magic around 5 a.m. when the sun wakes up !!!

I've seen some fawn chamois and funny marmots that kept "whistling" We should have a good weather but with humidity.
