Assistance for Alex - FAQs
I've been thinking (always a dangerous thing where I'm involved!)
And as Alex is looking to build this website up - Perhaps we could help him.
One of the things we find difficult is attracting, keeping and properly setting up members.. (in general - not all of us) So maybe if we kept our sensible heads on for a while and filled this thread with FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions for those who need the TLA explaining)
and answers to them - Folks browsing with an inkling to join may:
Have their reservations nullified
Get some good info to begin with
Have more choice deciding what to do
Come into the community quicker with less wasted time and money
etc.etc.etc.
Can we do it?
I think so.
FAQs with an answer below please.

1. DO I HAVE TO HAVE ALL THE KIT REQUIRED BEFORE I JOIN A GROUP?
....NO...NOT NORMALLY.....MOST GROUPS HAVE SPARE KIT...THEY MAY NEED YOU TO HAVE BASICS BUT THERE IS ALWAYS NORMALLY SPARE KIT AVAILABLE....
2. WILL I NEED TO NO GERMAN?
NOT AT FIRST...BUT THE BASICS WOULD HELP.......
3. WOULD I HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY EVENT IN THE GROUPS CALANDER?
AS MANY AS YOU CAN IS NORMALLY ACCEPTABLE AS WE ALL HAVE FAMILY ETC. COMMITMENTS ASWELL.....
4. DO I NEED MY OWN TRANSPORT?
HAVING YOUR OWN TRANSPORT IS ALWAYS BETTER BUT ANY GROUP WOULD STRIVE TO GET THEIR MEMBERS TO AN EVENT..YOU MAY BE SURPRISED BY HOW MANY RE-ENACTORS LIVE NEAR YOU AND ARE GOING TO THE SAME EVENT.

Sorry, can't answer them since it's a bit different here, but I can pose some for you...
Roughly how much will it cost to get started?
Are there fitness requirements or a fitness test?
How old do I have to be to join a group? and how old is too old to join a group?
Do you get paid for appearances?
What kinds of events are there?
Are there roles for my kids and my wife within a group?
Is there any sort of training I will need or get if I join?
Do I need to own a weapon and if I do how does the VCR bill effect that?
Hope those are helpful.. if not then bin 'em!!

these are some of the questions potencial members may ask.. with rough answers to them..
1. where do i buy a weapon ?
most groups know all the good dealers and will point you in the right direction. and give good advice on the proper weapon for your unit/ impression. (stress the age limits on certain weapons).
2. i've never fired a weapon before. how do i learn ?.
an experienced member will take you through the drill.. deact dry fire training. blockage clearing. loading /unloading.. safety procedures. do's & don'ts with weapons. etc. before you take part in any battle.(stressing the high importance of the safety needed /expected of members). and the hiring procedure... vickers/oxlade etc...
3. if i have'nt got enough kit can i still take part in events till i get it all ?
most group members have spare kit and can help with missing items until you have the proper regulation kit.. practically everyone joining groups starts from scratch... and good second hand kit can also be bought from mebers upgrading there own kit too.. web links etc..
4. where do we all stay at 2 & 3 day events ?
most groups camp out together on the event site with period tents. (explaining the whole living history / army in the field setting that is made up to form the static display area at events). but modern/plastic tents are permited although not near the display area..
5. what type of events are there ?
private battles ( held on private land, a battle senario held by reenactors for reenactors.excluding the public. with the usual campfire get together/sing song. story telling and laughter between members at night).
railway shows. ( a one/two day battle senario based around a train station with the public in attendance.. a low key fun event with usually an evening dance of some sort laid on.) sometimes with the public in period costume and a wartime feel to the station..
training day's ( day's set aside for members to come together and go through drills /commands. kit checks and battle tactic training for upcoming battle in the season. like a bonding session also ).
major events. (these are the big shows during the season that attract the big crowds and lots of other reenactors from different groups.. lots of vehicles and kit is on display and at the main ones lots of dealers attend)..
give a brief beltring / detling/ rundown. & weblinks to sites for pics of them..

Ok thing I get asked:
1. Where are you based?
Most groups have members form all over the UK; location is unimportant as we all travel to shows.
2. I live in the XXX, is there a group doing X local?
As above
3. How often do you meet and where?
Some groups meet once a month for training etc. but as there is events throughout the summer this does not matter.
4. Do you meet in a pub or?
Anywhere? But the pub is always good.
5. How much does it cost to join your group, and what do I get for my £XX.XX?
Subs etc are paid to cover PLI etc. but the main cost is kit and event expenses
6. Do you only do XXX unit?
Most groups have a main impression and may have one or two alternate impressions.
7. I want to do unit XXX can I join and do that?
This is what we do and it does or doesn’t fit in sorry…
8. I only want to do local shows
As long as we have your commitment and you join this should not be an issue bet we have some events where a 100% turnout is essential.
9. Can I be an officer?
We are rank structured and you earn it.
10. Can I have a big flashy gun, I don’t like the rifle, and I want a XXX.
Weapon according to your role within the group.
11. Can I join your unit; I have XXX and can be your XXX?
This is what we have; this is what you can do.
12. I don’t have the right kit because it cost too much but my mum made me this…
NO
13. Do you have kit you can loan me until I know if I want to join?
We have some but we expect within 12 months you to have purchased XYZ
14. Can I just join as Tank Crew?
If that role is available yes but join and with promotion this role will become available
15. Can I bring my kids?
PLI limitation mean we can’t have kids under 16 on the stand.
16. My boy, he’s 15 but very sensible, if I join can he to in a combat role, well the Germans did use kids and he looks older that 15….
NO
17. Where do I get my: Uniform, Equipment, Weapon
Lists of preferred dealers supplied

speaking as a newcomer, yet to join a group, its like any new adventure.
i'm worried about asking 'stupid' questions.
basically the age old fear of the apprentice asking the master i suppose.
in saying that, in my short time on these boards i must say i'm delighted with the responses to my queries.
mr muscle to clean a ww2 russian seized german rifle? you dont learn that off the history channel.
as to the original question, i'll be using this board and encouraging a select few (historically focused) friends to do likewise.
good job, keep up the good work
