Finnish M40 Helmet Markings

Post by Richk98 »

Info on the M40 can be found here......
http://www.pottia.net/pottia/index.htm

My best score kit wise at last weekends Military Odyssey show was a finnish M40 helmet, cunningly hidden at the back of a stall with a black plume of feathers on it masquerading as an italian.

before i email the chap at pottia can anyone shed any light on the these markings..........
an arrow with the letters SJ then 44L

this is the shell size W 72

some other shots (it 's not in the best condition, a few dents round the rim to give it character. but for 20 quid i'm well happy  )

Look on the bright side - it's still a bargain for twenty quid.

well, it might not be what i'd hoped but i'm still happy and i've learned a few things! that's what it's all about, thanks for everyones input.
on further investigation the SJ arrow thingy is a makers mark standing for "Sandvikens Järnverk" and the 44 is the year of production.
see http://www.geocities.com/swedish_helmets/ for more info.

kiitos,
rich

8) At last found the right site but this is an old post...
anyway, the helmet looks just like my Swedish version (although mine has no arrow markings and seems in v good condition!)

Externally identical and therefore good enough for reenactment.

You are indeed right. Finns do not have a tendency to drop things it seems

Kind regards
