Attached personel to the BFC?

Post by Schwartz Vogel »

Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me whether the German soldiers attached to the British Free Corps in their various roles, wore the insignia of the BFC or that or their parent units?

This excellent documentary, and the book by Adrian Weale, covers pretty thoroughly the whole British Free Corps history (link is pt.1, obviously follow youtube links to view the whole show).

You seem to have forgotten Wilhelm "Bob" Rössler the unit interpreter.
All Germans who served on the staff of the BFC, wore full BFC insignia from 20th April 1944 onwards.

I would be interested in additional information about Fred Stürmer,
can Schwartz Vogel offer a source?

Cheers, Bill.

Bill that really is fasinating!!!! Do any photographs exist? What type of awards did these personel have? I assume this is how re enactors get round the issue of putting awards on their uniforms? i assume that its also possible for the BFC to have been awarded medals, right at the end of the war (defence of Berlin) that went unrecorded? I know that the chance of any BFC soldiers being involved in the battle is remote, to say the least. Have you read the book Jackals of the Reich, the author gives an account of a Russian tank being taken out by a man in BFC uniform, however, where this evidence came from I have no idea, have you ever come across this?

Finally re `Fred` the medic, sadly thats all I have for you, I can`t recall even where I found his name, sorry.

The only member of the BFC to have served in Berlin during the battle,
was Wilhelm "Bob" Rössler, the one eyed interpreter, who before joining
the BFC was a member of the Wehrmacht.
(The old story about a Brit called Reginald Leslie Cornford who knocked out a T34
with a panzerfaust on 27th April 1945, is a post-war "story").

The only members of the BFC killed were two in the bombing of Dresden.

(Peter Deleney was killed in action Feb.1945, but he was American
and not with the BFC).

Cheers, Bill.
