Re: Handschar Division
This is interesting, anti partisan flights? I'm not saying that anyone's totally wrong or right on this thread, but could there be a chance that the other services mentioned would just be attached?jan wrote:An interesting listing with names and units from Bandenkampfabzeichen holders, most are SS or Polizei some are Kozaken, Heer Jäger or Luftwaffe ground units.
Also to Luftwaffe pilots like this one, (mentioned on page 2)
Ofw. der Luftwaffe Hermann Scharge, received the Bandenkampfabzeichen in Silber on 20.September 1944, for 107 combat days (anti-partisan flights).

As far as I'm aware the award was given for hand to hand fighting, not flying unless he got it for dropping troops by parachute and he was rewarded for multiple days of flying over bandit country?

Re: Handschar Division
The badge could be awarded for bravery or special achievements, not necessarily hand to hand combat, thats what the close combat clasp is issued for.You had to be fighting bandits for 20,50 and 150 days respectively.Luftwaffe personel is 30,75 and 150 sorties(a sortie is each time the aircraft leaves the ground in connection with an anti partisan action)Should an aircraft be shot down during the mission, this counts as three sorties.

Re: Handschar Division
First I want to thank you guys for taking interesting in re-enacting Handschar, it's a very obscure subject, unknown to many. I've been researching Handschar, Prinz Eugen and the insurgency in Yugoslavia for over 5 years now. I collected alot of rare pictures on the subject, the link to my gallery is in my signature. If anyone's interested there's also some rare footages on youtube.com.
I found these in a book on camouflage

Here's more on the Bandenkampfabzeichen
As it says below, the SS felt it was uniquely their badge. Prior to it, Hitler considered the close combat clasp the highest of infantry's decorations. The Banden badge was 2x harder to get compared to it.

Hi Moller
Just an observation but you have the wrong Handschar shield on your tunic ??,
the one you have is the Wehrmacht version with inscription, the SS version has
no scroll, (see earlier posts).
Also the SS rune badge is worn on the right pocket usually (going from resourses),
which denotes a Germanic SS member serving with a Foreign Volunteer Unit.
As for fez's, mine was originally from Bodrum/Turkey which i converted but i think
there is a dealer in Italy that sells them, unfortunately his name escapes me for
the moment, good hunting.

Re: Handschar Division
Thank you for your feedback.. I got that tunic from a guy in our unit, he got the insignia from Cirrus Lee and it was sewn by Lost Battalions, practically he got the tunic as is from them.... I will get it sorted out..!! As they say in the HR world, any feedback is good feedback!!

I was refferring to the SS Runic badge not the "bandit" badge (Anti Partisan badge)
which is worn on the left pocket as is the normal case for awards, the Runic badge
was worn on the right pocket due to there not being normally enough room on the right.
