M40/41 6 Button tunic
Hi all,
I got a replacement tunic from hikishop.com, i initially got the wrong M40 SS 5 button tunic, unfortunately when i received the right size, i noticed that this m40 tunic has 6 buttons instead of 5 it also has buttons on the inside of the collar, this would indicate that this is a mountaneers/gebirschjager tunic, but i cannot find any reference material on 6 buttoned m40 tunics at all.
I want to keep it due the hassle of sending it back and forth, which cost alot of money.
So i want to convert it from a mountaineer uniform to a normal 6 buttoned m40 uniform to do a heer impression.
Beside the collar buttons are there any other special changes to this m40 tunic to accomendate the mountaineers? also if you have some Regulair mid-war infantry reference pictures for me for a heer impression with this tunic please share it. I really have a hard time to find anything
Thanks a lot in advance!

The buttons on the inside of the collar are for the Kragenbinde. It buttons to those to keep the collar clean and protect the neck from chafing. Nothing GJ related on that uniform.

Re: M40/41 6 Button tunic
Thank you so much!! is the 6 buttoned m40 a more rarity to wear or was it common wear by the Wehrmacht Heer? because i am going through many historical pictures but most of the time i only can find 5 button M40 pictures.
Most pictures that i find are for the M36 or M43 tunics, which are sporting the 6 buttons.
I do not want to portray a niece but rather the majority during certain time periods during the war. (Mainly Early/mid war)

Re: M40/41 6 Button tunic
a m40 with 5 buttons will soon be on it`s way, so i will end up with 2 m40 tunics. 5 vs 6 buttons.
5 buttons for a dutch ss impression, 6 buttons for euhhhhh no idea you guys have some recommendation for this tunic?
perhaps i can do a heer granadeer or such impression build around this 6 button tunic? I am not sure, sorry for my unawareness

The tunic you are referring to is commonly referred to as the 'M41', introduced on May 26th 1941. In addition to the sixth button, the lower pocket construction was also simplified (to the style seen on M42 and later tunics also). The tunics were manufactured with mouse grey generic insignia as appropriate for the time period, and are very common on original photos.

Thanks I found this information, but I still do not know which Heer units used these M40/1 tunics with the 6 buttons, do you have any reference? as I cannot find it? Thanks!

Re: M40/41 6 Button tunic
It was as widespread an issue tunic as the others regarding units. It wasn't specialised for one particular type of unit or something.

Check breast pockets! The tunic pictured has the top pocket flaps LEVEL 180 degrees...
imo a too common failure with too many repro makers... They should be slanted DOWNWARDS in the direction of the centre of the jacket.
Message to repro tunic makers-check your detailing. Why not buy an at the front texled one....they seem great.
hiki's german wool isnt bad though..service is good.

I have one of the new ATF M36's arriving next week. Be interesting to see how it stacks up quality wise against my texled m42.
