Indeed. Stig ordered a job lot from the USA back in 2005 and they literally grew holes in a day. I still have one pair, and intend to attach the tops to more robust socks :D

This list has been a big help to me. i'm An avid airsofter and im looking towards joining ww2 skirms. I've wanted to start as a gebirgsjäger but the price of such a kit made me look towards other ventures.
the thing with airsoft is, the kar98's are pretty much all rubbish unless im willing to pay close to a 1000 or more and im on a somewhat loose budget. i've been recommended picking up a StG MP44 since they outperform pretty much any other ww2 aeg.
my question is, what do i need to replace for the Kar98 if i am intent to use the Sturmgewehr instead ?

First off would be to get a decent set of MP 44 mag pouches. Do not get the ones with the leather lids (i did) they are czech post war pouches. German pouches are all canvas. Do be careful in choosing. The AEG MP 44 mags don't fit some brands of pouches.
