The use of Noise from Japanese Ruses compiled by HQ XIVTH Army

a) In all theatres the Japanese have made much use of noise to deceive and demoralize our troops. For example, bullets that explode on impact have been fired over the heads of our troops ( the sound of explosions coming from behind and from the flanks is apt to deceive inexperienced troops into thinking they have been surrounded).

b) To give the impression of greater firepower, the Japanese have been known to imitate the noise of machine-guns either with wooden rattles or by beating bamboo sticks together.

c) Chinese crackers thrown into our positions at night, mortar bombs bursting with a loud explosion, and rattling rifle bolts are some of the devices that have been employed to give an impression of strength and lower the morale of our troops in the hope of causing them to withdraw prematurely.

d) From the SW Pacific it has been reported that the Japanese have kept absolute silence while they have been moving forward to take up their positions, but that when they have reached their objective they have made as much noise as they could in order to suggest that they are a larger force than they actually were. Similarly, enemy troops making a frontal advance have created a noise in order to cover the silent move towards the flank of the main attacking force.

I say Baaaaannnnzaaaaiiiiii.....all simple, but very effective!

Liebe Grüße,
Beate

The midget subs were called Kaiten and weren't very successful considering the number of crews lost.

48 feet, 3 feet diameter, 8.3 tons, 3,400 pound TNT warhead.

.
Just as a point of interest, my Grandad was in the Royal Navy in the Pacific on HMS Belfast. After the bombs the Belfast docked in the remains of Kure harbour to secure the docks for the occupation forces.
One of the jobs he had whilst there was him and one of his mates had to 'guard' a huge dock full of these midget subs - though they spent most of there time climbing in them knicking the Samurai swords which each one of them contained. :)

To xtc-alec,

I am Alvin aka Sturmannlee...well, our primary impression is doing WW2 Japanese Infantry soldiers...essentially, recreating the 5th Infantry Division:

Our secondary impressions consist of Waffen SS, 1st SS LAH division:

http://www.geocities.com/ss_div_lah/

and doing Osttruppen of the 352nd Division.

http://www.geocities.com/alvinlee_81/

It's after years of militaria collecting and reading up that we are able to portray and achieve today's standards.

We are still incapable of doing any full scale reenactment. In fact, any sort of reenactment is virtually in it's infancy here in Singapore and we are doing our best to fill in that gap by perfecting our gear for living history first.

Pls do not hesitate to ask more questions. :D

Warm regards

Well the first attack wave to arrive at Pearl Harbour consisted of 183 planes with 51 'Val' dive bombers, 40 'Kate' torpedo bombers, 50 high level bombers and 42 'Zero' fighters with Mitsuo Fuchida, sounding the battle cry: "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!) starting the attack at 7.53am.

At 7:15 a.m., a second attack wave of 167 planes takes off from the Japanese carriers and heads for Pearl Harbor.

This resulted in the Americans being taken completely by surprise. The first attack wave targets airfields and battleships. The second wave targets other ships and shipyard facilities. The air raid lasts until 9:45 a.m. Eight battleships are damaged, with five sunk. Three light cruisers, three destroyers and three smaller vessels are lost along with 188 aircraft. The Japanese lose 27 planes and five midget submarines which attempted to penetrate the inner harbor and launch torpedoes.

Hope this helps.

Hi.

After reading some articles about Pacific War, I started to be interested in WWII Japanese Army. I`d like to ask if you could recomend any interesting sites (but only in English  ) where I could read about structures, uniforms and armament of Japanese army to gain at least basic knowledge on this subject ?
