yeah i've got a couple of pairs of repro WW2 pattern Army tabi's, infact the tabi is still a popular form of footware in Japan, alot of construction workers wear them because they give great grip if your climbing up and down scaffolding all day.

They do up by using 3 metal tabs running vertically down the side of the tabi which hook through string loops. simple but effective

Tabi's

Post by Funkerat »

Tabi's were very comfortable and they are to this day one of the more common items to find in the tunnels of Iwo. I've found more pairs and single Tabi's in the tunnels than I have rotten leather field boots and discarded Japanese gas masks and mess tins. Each year I've gone (2002, 2003 and 2005) I've found several rotted Tabis strewn about in the tunnels-amid gas masks, army issue sake bottles, army issue beer bottles, mess tins and lots of rotted blankets and rain capes.

Letters from Iwo J

Just saw the film..very enjoyable and good to see the much talked about "other side".."thin red line " was the last one I saw that seemed to
do a good portrayal of the IJA..Read the book before seeing the film too.
the close combat stuff was bloody good. Dont think id be able to follow the example of my officer if he produced a box of hand grenades(enough to go round) followed by a "so long lads " speech though...those boys
meant business when it came to total war!Must have been unbearable in those tunnels and caves though..Go see.

I have seen and now own this film. I have to say, I am pretty bloody impressed- accurate (as far as my limited knowlege allows) uniforms, believable appearances storyline, gut wrenching action, superb acting and a real lump in your throat feeling throughout...stirring stuff and a credit to Eastwood. By far one of the best war films made thus. I would love to see something similar made re the New Guinea/ Indon Islands battles and feature Aussies and Japanese. Two thumbs up.

Miles and miles better than that rot, Flags of our Fathers- what the f#ck were they thinking with that? No comparison.

Anyone notice that Kazunari Ninomiya character Saigo doesn't fire his rifle once in the film ?.

I must see this then. It is definately on my "need to see" list! I liked the Greates Raid if for no other reason you got to see a lot of good views of Japanese equipment and uniforms.
