Just saw it last night.
Absolutely epic film, touching in some parts harrowing in others and saddening it parts as well. Its the film equivalent of reading 'Forgotton Soldier' except that book was about the Eastern Front. I even cried in some parts.
On a side note, does anybody know what happened to General Kuribayashi's pistol (Colt 1911) in the end of the film an American Marine picks it up...just slightly intriguing that no-one that knew the General (he was the military attache to the U.S before the war) tracked him or it down.

i have a slight feeling that the ivory handled colt was abit of filmography rather than 100% fact
