Corowa 2009 YEAR OF THE AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLE

Post by West-Front »

Welcome to COROWASWIM-IN.ORG, just as we settle down after our most successful show yet, the Year of the Tracked Vehicle in 2008! This site is the permanent home of the famous Corowa Swim-In, held annually since 1980 on the banks of the Murray River in the wonderful country town of Corowa, NSW, Australia.

Corowa has become the largest military vehicle rally under the Southern Cross and is attended by guests and participants alike from all over the world. Our next show, in March 2009, is already in the planning stages and will be magnificent in every respect! Every year sees a new theme, with next year's being the dual theme of Year of the Amphibious Vehicle and Year of the Blitz II, in honour of our 30th consecutive event - Corowa has come a long way since the first ad-hoc swim-in of amphibious vehicles in 1980!

In increasing numbers every year now, those who own and restore ex-military vehicles from all eras and all nations gather together at Corowa to trade vehicles, parts and stories. These include those not only from Australia and New Zealand, but more and more, from as far away as North America and Europe. Corowa has come into its own within that unique international community of vehicle restoration enthusiasts and not just for the vehicles themselves; never mind that Australia offers a climate condusive to the survival of 65 year-old vehicles, the comradery amongst those who invest much time and money in their endeavours to preserve history is unmatched anywhere!

Corowa '09 will once again see collectors, restorers and enthusiasts from around the globe, this time for a special event - the 30th consecutive annual Swim-In, in which we expect the largest number of ex-military vehicles ever seen together in one place in the southern hemisphere! As we prepare for this history-making show, please follow along with us here as we present to you a unique look at Corowa past, present and future.

Both here on this site and in our designated area in the forum of our host, MAPLE LEAF UP, we will continue to chronicle the evolution of this remarkable hobby and its even more remarkable participants. As our links to the left come alive, please visit us often for updates, and say hello daily in our area on MLU!

Follow along too on our sister site Corowa30 as KVE's Secretary Jan Thompson endeavours to assemble the necessary material to permanently record the experiences and memories of 30 years of Corowa in time for the next show! Your participation in this magnificent effort is encouraged and appreciated...

Amphibians at home in river venture

THE Murray at Corowa was yesterday swamped by amphibians of the mechanical kind.A fleet of 10 amphibious army jeeps and a sole amphibious leisure craft took to the water for the annual Corowa Swim-In.

They were joined by 130 military vehicles on land for the 30th consecutive annual gathering of Khaki Vehicle Enthusiasts.Sydney’s Trevor Boyle made a big splash with his 1943 general purpose amphibious jeep which he bought in pieces and restored.

“We have done several trips down the Murray two weeks at a time and we thoroughly enjoy the river,” he said.“Now we are just looking for a spot to get it in the water today, it’s a bit muddy around the banks but we will get it in.”

All eyes were on the vehicle as it made its way into the water, but the jeep had a bit of trouble making it back up the muddy bank and had to be pulled in with the help of 10 men.Khaki Vehicle Enthusiasts president Rick Cove said participants came from all over Australia.“We have one guy here who has brought an armoured vehicle by boat from Tasmania,” he said.

However, it wasn’t just army and military vehicles being paraded, with an amphibious leisure craft also taking to the water.“Its front wheels act as a rudder and it’s very easy to drive,” driver Boyd Wyatt said.

Brisbane’s Sean O’Donnell, who built the vehicle, described it as a pleasure craft but said it did have a functional purpose.“This is our first event and we came down here to see more vehicles swimming,” he said.
