Re: post sutterlin script?

Heinz: My wife and I just had the conversation this morning about the shopping list in deutsche Schrift! If you're interested, there's actually a Freundenkreis der deutschen Schrift that is made up of German speakers who exchange letters in the old hand writing style. It's fascinating stuff.

Re: Kriegsprache

I'll second that! Kriegsprache is an outstanding reference and is well worth the price. It is hands down the best dictionary of the sort available.

Re: post sutterlin script?

Barry: I know what you mean. I learned to write in cursive in grade school back during the 60s, and have done block printing ever since I've been an adult. To make it more complicated, I'm left handed. But, the deutsche Schrift is coming. It just takes time and some practice. I am posting a couple o...

Re: post sutterlin script?

Barry: What is it that's giving you trouble? Maybe I can offer some pointers or tips. I think what makes Sütterlin hard for those of us who learned other forms of handwriting is that we learned flowing, loopy letters, and Sütterlin isn't particularly like that. Plus, we haven't had years to practice...

Re: post sutterlin script?

Barry: I am attaching a link to Amazon.de in this post for you. They sell an excellent workbook to practice the letters and letter groups. Like I wrote in the first post, I've been working on this for awhile, and am doing a lot better. It is definitely an acquired skill and takes practice. I use Süt...

Re: post sutterlin script?

Johann: You're right that Sütterlin and the other related forms of handwriting can be difficult to read. Every writer had their own style and abbreviations were commonly used, especially in military writing. But, by learning to write the letters, it becomes much easier to learn to decipher text bloc...

Re: post sutterlin script?

Barry: Have you thought about trying to learn to write the script yourself? I started out by learning to write Sütterlin after a friend asked me to translate some of his grandfather's fieldpost letters from the war. I've been practicing writing several times a week for about a month, and it actually...

Re: So, some of the Germans did have a sence of humour

I started a thread on the Feldgrau forum several weeks ago where I've been translating and posting jokes, anecdotes and funny stories, along with a few cartoons, from mostly wartime, or prewar punlications intended for soldiers in the German armed forces. You don't need to register to just look thro...

Re: Medics and weapons

There's a lot of misunderstanding about the Geneva Convention and whether or not medical personnel are permitted to carry weapons. There was recently a thread on this topic on another forum and there were many photographs posted of Sani's carrying weapons. Here are the pertinent articles from the Ge...

Really powerful little film and I especially liked the music. Where did you find it? The atmosphere would be familiar to anyone who's served.

Re: Participation - looking for opinions

If they're paying unit dues, then that would be in a different category from someone who isn't. Maybe you develop a reserve or associate membership status for those who can't commit to regular participation, but still want to maintain their membership in your unit.

You guys have an amazing unit impression and you've obviously done a lot of work perfecting it. The photos are time capsules into another world. Keep up the great job!

Greetings from Eugene, Oregon, USA

Hello from Eugene, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. I'm a retired soldier (served 22 years in the US Army). Most of my time was in heavy armored units as a cavalry scout. I finished up my career as an infantry NCO. My last assignment prior to retiring was as a rifle company firs...
