Re: Water Supply in the Mountains
snow = pure water (H2O) = having the runs    Human body needs a mineralization of water, you cannot drink only H2O... i mean you can but you fall ill what is not the best way to fight  That shouldn't be much of an issue if you are eating at the same time. That makes me wonder t...

Re: Water Supply in the Mountains
Thanks. I actually didn't know that they carried 2 liters of water. This weekend I think I'm going to take a variation of the same trail and try to hold back on the water a bit.

Water Supply in the Mountains
Just this last weekend I went on a hike to a local peak. The trail had a 616 m elevation gain over about 3 km. Over the course of going there and back, I consumed the entire 1 L of water that I took along, and probably should have consumed more. This made me wonder, how did the Gebirgsjager maintain...

Re: Original unissued mountain ruck - a beauty!
After 6 weeks in transit from Germany, I finally got my rucksack, and man is it pretty. This thing looks and feels almost unused. Some of the leather could use a once over with some oil, and one of it's former owners obsessively wrote his name all over it, but I can live with that.

Re: Gebrigsjäger and Bergfuhrer badges
As for the Army Gebirgsjägers, there were only about 380 Heeresbergführer badges issued during the whole war...not that many when you look at it. This is interesting. Was the US Army Intelligence report on German Mountain Warfare confused on what exactly a Heeresbergführer was? Or was there some sp...

I also recall seeing raw pine tar once upon a time when looking for wooden barrels. But my guess is that this is more of what you are looking for.

Re: Pre-war Austrian Pitons?
They don't look like Pitons.... I don't think your rope would afford you any type of protection tied into one of those... it would just slip off! That's what I was thinking! I guess if you pounded them in far enough, the rock face would close the gap, but they look more like some kind of sh...

They're claiming that they're pre-war pitons, but these don't look like any piton I've ever see or heard of.

Re: Original Gebirgs gear
... very nice! What's the weight on those? Leading a climb and swinging one of those around whilst you placed a Piton would have been quite a responsibility especially thinking about those below you... The one I have I think weighs about the same as your typical claw hammer. Maybe a little less. Fo...

Herr Hauptmann! This is David Weiser. Thanks for the reference pictures. Maybe I'll just wait and hope that Hong Kong Keith eventually opens his shop back up. I take a hiatus from reenactment and two of my favorite vendors go under. Figures
