Re: German POW's held in Wisbech during WW2
Yeah, we were thinking about the Imperial War Museum. The National Archives and Cambridgeshire County Council would be good places to start. Thanks for the tip!

Re: German POW's held in Wisbech during WW2
Thanks for the info,
We did do some internet searches for general information but my friend wants to know if there are any records kept anywhere that would shed some light on the POW's, their movements etc. I thought about approaching the Imperial War Museum?

German POW's held in Wisbech during WW2
Hi all, A good female friend of mine (who knows very little about WW2 and even less about re-enacting) has discovered that her Granddad, who sadly passed away last year, was a German soldier who was captured on the Western front and held in a camp in Wisbech during the latter stages of the war. He t...

Re: 33rd Waffen SS Charlemagne
Guys, Good effort but you've made some fairly major errors in your impressions. Discard the jackboots and replace them for hobnailed ankle boots. Discard the camo helmet covers, Charlemagne did not ever wear them. They were discontinued in 1943. Overhead camouflage smocks are also a no-no. Your guys...

Re: 33rd Waffen SS Charlemagne
Pan Jozek is correct, the French SS only wore Pea dot camouflage in the period after the return from Pomerania. Even then, they didn't have enough to go round and had to give priority to certain units over others within the division. Some guys had full suits but most didn't have any. I like the qual...

Re: US Paratrooper, Normandy 1944, photo vignette
Nice selection of personal items there Pipes, I did 101st AB for 8 years and never got such a complete set of items for my pack impression. Very nice. One thing though (sorry) replace the wool nit gloves with the US leather palmed type with the OD wool backs. The cricifix is also a nice touch.

Re: 33rd Waffen SS Charlemagne
The picture on the far left of the parade is of Dutch volunteers. The picture on the far right is most likely of a Belgain 'Walonie' volunteer as the Charlemagne and earlier LVF did not serve in the West.

Re: 208.Infanterie-Division 'Fall Weiss' photoshoot
Zoepf, You would be entirely wrong in your assumption that I and others on this forum are simply waiting to jump in and criticise. I know some of the guys who participated in this photoshoot and have the utmost respect for them and their excellent potrayal, as they well know. I merely pointed out an...

Re: Photoshoot: Algerian War 1955-56
There is a series of books by the French photographer Marc Flament. They are photo studies of the 3e RPC in Algeria. He also did one for French conscripts there too. He co authored them with Jean Larteguy, Marcel Bigeard and Michel le Cornec. For written sources Alastair Horne's 'A Savage War Of Pea...

Re: Photoshoot: Algerian War 1955-56
It's a French FM 24/29 Light Machine Gun, produced by Manufacture d'Armes Chatellerault. Chambers a 7.5mm round. It was based on the workings of the Browning Automatic Rifle, but top loading. The Czech Brno ZB26 was based on this weapon. Used by France from 1924 right up to 1958 when it was replaced...
