I'm no longer going to be a Teuton, Can anyone help me on where to look for information, on my two ancestors,
I want to know about these two:
Patrick Spens officer of 24 of James II of Scotlands bodyguards.
sent to King Charles VII france in 1450. The guards became The Scots Guards or
Garde Écossaise was an elite Scottish military unit founded in 1418
by the Valois Charles VII of France, to be personal bodyguards to the French monarchy.
They were assimilated into the Maison du Roi and later formed the first Company of the
Garde du Corps du Roi or "Life Guards". In 1450, King James II send a company of 24 noble
Scots under the command of Patrick de Spens, son of his custodian. This company takes the
name of "archiers du corps" or "gardes de la manche". On 31 August 1490, this company,
these of Patry Folcart, Thomas Haliday and a part of the company of Robin Petitloch begin
to be the first company of "archiers of the King's gard" under the command of Guillaume
Stuier (Stuart). At the beginning "la compagnie écossaise des gardes du corps du roi"
included 100 "gardes du corps" (25 bodyguards and 75 "archiers"). Each bodyguard had four
men-at-arms under his command, (a squire, an archer, a craquenier and a servant), one of
them acquired the name of "premier homme d'armes du royaume de France". They were finally
disbanded in 1830 at the abdication of Charles X.
and,
Thomas Spens was bishop of Aberdeen from 1457-1480,
before that was bishop of Galloway (1450-1458)
Lord Privy Seal, a post he held until 1470, Regularly journeyed to France and to England,
and in 1464 he and Alexander Stewart, duke of Albany, a son of James II, were captured
at sea by some English sailors. Edward IV, to whom the bishop had previously revealed an
assassination plot, set him at liberty, and he was partly responsible for the treaty of
peace made about this time between the English king and James III. He also helped to bring
about the meeting between Edward IV and Louis XI of France at Picquigny, and another treaty
of peace between England and Scotland in 1474.
1-Also want to know what Scotlands diplomacy with England was during the WOTR,
2-What the dress of King James II of Scotlands royal guard would have looked like
3-or that of the early Guarde Esossaise of Charles VII.
4-French-England Diplomacy between 1450-1485.
5-Also (not as interested in Thomas so much but...) Scottish bishops outfit circa 1450-80.
I have full access and rights to the family name as son of the current head of the clan. a
And would like to while I cant fight for a while due to lung disease, create a character of
my ancestors for War of the Roses Reenactment, After 10 years of doing this its about time
I got my act together and stopped being so complacent.
If anyone could help me I'd be very grateful, thanks,
Dom Spens. of the Craigsanquar/Lathallian Line.
