Ok,

At the top we have a pair of RAU Repro gamaschen,
At the Bottom is a Pair of 1942 stamped and marked Original gamaschen

Same again, but this time on the inside

Put the the repro gamaschen on top, and there is abit of difference dont you think?

So your repros are shorter than your originals :? and the person before said theres were 25mm bigger than the originals. Be curious to know if both originals were the same size :?:

Conclusion non the wiser on correct gaitors

Hans> There are different models of gamaschen

On thing that strikes me about my RU gamaschen is that the stitching is all black, as opposed to the white waxed tread commonly used by the german army. I have a suspscion that the RU ones are in fact from some army (Czech perhaps?)

hi dink,

The 2 original gamaschen's are the same size :),

mikkel, cheers for the link, it shows that i have a pair of Gamaschen A.

The RAU Gaiters, well i dont know , they seem too new to be from old stock. But i will be wearing my original gamaschen's as the leather is very suttle and soft and the stitching is in great order.

Just another bit on this, I've read and heard from more than one source that Third Reich gamaschen only ever had three holes in the straps, why would anyone make repros different?

Dunno but I'm glad they do, or I'd have to have put extra holes in myself. I assume its to cope with the increase in fankle size what with post war indulgance ;)
