Helmet Camouflage database
Post your examples of (of course authentic) helmet camouflage here, please with a source (if possible) and the time period used.
I'll start off:
Wochenschau, December 1944. To me it looks like a cut-up German net, not allied. The knots in the net are too big for anything allied I have seen so far. The issue helmtarnnetz was introduced in 1942. (More info needed) Not to be confused with the post-war BGS helmet net; which is this one: http://hem.bredband.net/runmat/pics/de/ ... 53-net.jpg <--- totally wrong.
Edit; August 10th, 1942 to be precise.

Very common, especially in the early years often seen on photographs:

Cloth or burlap covering in the colour of the terrain.

White paint
Look at the guy on the right nothing more than a single twine going round the hemet with branchies in it
Look at this SS Nord guy and the make up of the hemet cover and the fact that there is a clip to the front
Guy at the front using mosquito net over the helmet and cover SS Nord again
These came from my collection here are some more from the unit web page
SS Nord guys using the Helmet cover not the Helmet a common thing with Nord The Finnish troops they are with dont even use Helmets
Simple white cover on this pair of SS guys
White paint again but look closer cord or wire mounted to the front
Standard SS Hemet cover on these two SS guys

Red/brownish foliage band cut from inner tube 1939/40
same, but black (Russia, 1941)
Same , with foliage added (location and date unknown)
Odd burlap/cloth strips and vests, expimental unit thingy, not widespread at all (location and date unknown)

Correct.
And yes, it could indeed be brown paper.

A good photo of the early version of a helmet cover, not one that has been put on backwards.

Re: Helmet Camouflage database
Well we could both be totally wrong Paul
My thinking on going with the photo though is the construction of it, it's not the usual 5 panel common cover that we know and love and it seems to fit the shape of the steel pot nicely, unlike if you put one of the later ones on backwards.
I do understand what you mean about the frayed part though, although I'm not sure if the front of a helmet would fray the cover right to the rocker clip?

Re: Helmet Camouflage database
i totaly agree with you john,it fits the helm perfectley,it does (nt) have more than a look of one that has been put on back to front to be honest with you.
utter confusion john, forgot a word out that will make things a little clearer,i ve put it in brackets, please read again

A helmet cover placed wrongly won't fit nicely.
