When a soldier went on leave did he also receive a document stating he was on leave or was it just noted in his soldbuch? I have the in and out travel passes from the generosity if Wiganer.

Local leave was authorised with a pass which allowed the Kp-Chef to insert the number of hours the soldier was permitted to be away from his unit. I've seen proper printed chits and also typed ones replicated on a mimeograph.

The pass shown above is a personal leave chit and permitted the soldier to be away for any length of time (I have one issued for 3 weeks, permitted the soldier to be at his home. It's endorsed with a red rubber stamp which says "compassionate"). The reverse of the form has instructions on what to do in the event of an air raid, details of the items issued for the trip home and it also entitled him to be issued with ration cards. Leave over 5 days was also recorded on pages 23 and 24 of the Soldbuch.

There was also a small leave book, which recorded the details of all the 24 hour passes issued (see 1st paragraph!).

The 2 part rail pass was not a permit for leave, merely for free rail travel. It was an offence to sell or misuse these, and it's one of the things that the Feldgendarmerie and Bahnhofswache were hot on checking. You had to have some authority to travel, such as a leave pass, movement order or the sonderausweis D. Failure to have the correct paperwork got you arrested.

Harold - Try Matt DiPalma on your side of the pond, he does some excellent forms http://repropaperwork.com/index-de.html and he is very fair with his prices and the quality is excellent.
He has all your travel forms.

I highly recommend Matt's forms and as far as I know he is the only person making repro Kennkarte on Leinen and has plans for other Leinen pieces

He also sells a nice wallet  you dont need one Harold being a tallented chap, but if others do go visit.

I've got the leinen cloth/paper for the kennkarte and drivers licence, I am looking at the viability of reproing some items. There were also card versions, which became more common after mid 1943.

Quote from German Third Reich Documents Vol 2 Military Documents-
There were five primary types of leave
Erholungsurlaub-Rest and Relaxation
Sonderurlaub- Special
Wochenendurlaub-Festtagsurlaub-Weekend Holiday
Nachturlaub-Overnight
Arbeitsurlaub-Work

Leave earned could not be carried over from one year to the next and was in defined priority

Priorities were as follows
Bad situation at home
married(especially those with children)
WW1 veterans
Those who hadnt had leave for a long time .

There are various specifics to do with each leave which would take too long to add to this post but please PM me for details .
Incidentally a soldier serving in the armed forces would not have a Kennkarte.these are civilian documents valid for five years and registered and stamped at the police district where you were registered .When you became eligible for military service ,passed the medical at your local WEDS and sent to the EandA Battalion of the unit you were posted to you were issued your Soldbuch and Ehrkenungsmarcke .These became your ID.
Please feel free to contact me and I will gladly pass on what I know

I've seen a lot of originals marked "Heimaturlaub" as well, FWIW.
