I share your pain! I find putting the texture on to be tough- it either gathers in a large amount, and then other areas are bare or very sparse. When I even it out, the texture looks too textured. I found putting an approximate amount of paint and texture for a helmet in a small can, and then stippling the paint with a coarse brush to be about the best way. The last picture seems to look good (to my poorly trained eyes!)

Colour- that is so variable, I think it may be a bit light, but I admit, colours are so difficult because of helmet/paint age, our monitors and what they may have gone through back then.

When putting on the texture, at a good distance use an old salt shaker - this way you get a more even texture, it dies make a mess so probably best doing it outside

Hi Patrick Thanks for respond and sharing your experience with helmet restoration , any photos of your helmet ? For example French Legionnaires had slightly different helmets , maybe I'm wrong but who really knows ??? Genuine Ral codes are no longer valid etc.etc.

RAL codes are still available - just ask your local paint shop ( if in Europe ) and they will be able to sort you out - some are however not available anymore, an example being dunkelgelb
