Camoflage Choices?

Post by johankreig »

WHich Cammo would Field Police have worn, I am told they used everything from splinter to ss plain tree, what should I use, I do like to look different from the usual rank and file infantry, so am looking for something more unusual.

Not really a field police thing though is it? I mean a limited amount of camo, issue it to the men on the front line or those further back who don't need it?

Good old field grey or zelt for Heer. A jump smock for FJ. A smock for SS.

There is a nice pic in the "Waffen SS Uniform" book by Andrew Steven/Peter Amodio
with an SS Feldgendarmerie wearing a "custom made" type short original camo jacket
made from a zelt, according to this explanation because the SS Field Police WERE behind
the lines they had access to camp tailors etc to make these weird items, this is their line
of thought, personally most SS Field Police pics ive seen are mostly in field grey uniforms
unless they are near the front line at a checkpoint for instance then the most camo ive
seen being worn by these type of units are either a helmet cover and/or camo trousers.

It appears that the uniform jacket with gorget/insignia is favored because it is a sign of
authority, although as you are portraying Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager Field Police, ive seen
pics of the knockensack being worn with the gorget tbh, either that or the blue flieger
bluse, thats your best bet, stick to the norm, good luck

still unusre, this topic seems to be focused on SS-FG, while i am interested in army, I know luftwaffe used the splinter smocks and para helms, but i cant find anything that says either way with regards to army, have seen some pics of them wearing cammo trousers either iti or splinter, but what about when then had to go into combat, which from what I have read, they frequently did for many reasons.

Army smocks were rarely issed en mass. Some time items went to specialist who would benefit from the use of the items, machine gun teams, snipers and those who had some sway officers and SNCOs. I've not seen a any pics of Army FG with smocks, not to say it didn't happen, but they didn't need it like the other fighting soldiers did they.

FJ and SS units were more commonly issed their own camo items en mass so that's why you see their own FG with Camo.

Heer - very rare to see camo being used other than a zeltbahn or the occasional reversible. See the original post Dave posted above for the analysis I did a few years ago.

And please don't go down the splinter trousers look. Most of them look farb as **** and terrible. Field grey's look sharp as anything, and when you sit still....it's pretty good camoflauge.....

I always find that a little bit of research and getting some reference books always helps:

Papa , you're right , of course - research and reference books ( isn't that a big part of the joy of the hobby ? ) . I would also include observation - look at pictures of the time , and see what WAS worn , not just what SHOULD have been worn - if you can find some with camo , go ahead and reproduce the impression - if you can't , chances are they didn't wear it , or seldom did - look at what the AVERAGE is , and go for that . Chances are , you'll look more convincing in field grey .

Copied here the results of Daves check on photos he holds.

836 Heer FG photos: 9 instances (photos) of camo being worn, in all cases it was a splinter parka.
98 SS FG photos: no camo at all.

From this i would say cammo is unilikely and out of keeping with the average FG

Good advice, thats what i more or less said above "stick with the norm" and you can't
go far wrong, do some research, look at the pics what are out there and try to
reproduce what you see in your portrayal, its more realistic and believable basically
Good luck
