Can anyone please tell me if you can buy a reproduction Shako cap, or is it only the war and post ones available?

As Dave says makes a difference in the leather colour, also it makes a difference in the piping colour on the Tunic and shoulder boards as well as the colour of the Police sleeve eagle.
Credit to you for looking at this but i have to say you will struggle to get the uniform togeather i have spent 6 years trying to complete my Rural Gendarme set up and still cant find a few bits (brown riding boots for instance). the leather work for Rural police is Brown and piping is Orange, i know thats not what you are after but in the main you will have to buy genuine stuff since whilst there is some about it is little and far between for this reason you will unless very lucky pay a premium price, for instance a reasonable wartime Shako for the Rural Politzei cost me over £600 about 5 years ago and depending on head size you may struggle to get one to fit.
Repro Shako,s i have only ever known one who made a coulpe but the prices were over £1000 and he doesnt make them any more.
I would suggest before going into this you do a fair bit of research and decide what branch you want to do and go from there, remember the colour of the Police uniforms is totally different to a Heere or SS one in that it is what is known as Police or Toxic green (very similar to the post war police uniform colour.

Dave you posted a graph of the various Police leather and piping colours plus ranks and rank epaulettes a long time back maybe you could place it here please.

Cheers now

Dave

Dont be put off just decide on a branch and a rank to portray and keep your eyes open for the bits you need, take time to get the gear togeather. I would suggest Ordnunspolitzei since the leatherwork is black (boots, belt etc) so not to hard to source. Piping is green so once again not hard to add to a tunic and riding breeches. A pair of post war Police Breeches is very close to the wartime ones in colour and cut which just leaves the tunic for which maybe a post war police one could be altered to be very close. As for badging etc the Police arm eagle is fairly easy to source but the shoulder boards may take some time to find (try looking at various shows as well as the net), the collar patches (which are completely different to any other branch od service ones) can be found just needs patience. Rather than a Shako why not go for a dress cap, available from several dealers for around £150 to £200 which is a bloody sight cheaper than a Shako and it has to be said far more practicable as well as comfortable (the Shako,s are from experience brain burners in any sunshine). Dont give up on this cos there is only 2 doing this impression so far as i am aware.

Cheers now
