Barracks item question

Post by Krupp »

I have an event coming up next month that has a barracks for the G.I.s and Axis powers. Since we are just starting out as a unit, and have next to nothing as camp gear, so we are staying in said barracks. I was wondering what stuff I should have, to make the stay in there a little bit more period and a less bit "Farby" . At least the minimum gear for a three day and two night weekend. Thanks for any help on this one. You guys and Gals have your stuff together, so I wouldn't ask anywhere else. Cheers! :D

Get yourself two grey blankets and the obligatory blue check sheet and pillowcase.
Maybe a foot locker (just a simple wooden box) to keep your essentials in and a schemel - four legged stool.

If cooking is allowed, find a Jewel Stove and use that to heat up your tins of soup or whatever. There are some excellent German food web sites to be found... You can get Some good Topften if you search.

Towel and maybe an enamel bowl for washing with a jug if you're really posh..... Socks, shirts, spare undies... I use grey boxers - not strictly period but better than CK or Tommy Hilfigers (although is name is German)
How about a couple of three period pin up pictures to put above you bunk????
A bottle of cognac - it was very popular as was whiskey when they could find it. Germans like whiskey and I'm finding this schnappes prediliction is mostly myth..... Talking to vets they liked a tipple and would go for brandy or whiskey in preference to korn or schnappes..... They liked wine and also (of course)NChampagne when they could get it

I'm sure some more lads will contribute here... but this should get you started (and relieve you of a good amount of dollars!)

Thanks Paul. I have everything ordered. I still have to find a footlocker. I guess you hit on the basics because nobody else spoke up.

For what you want/need for this event Paul was pretty much comprehensive in his remarks.
The only thing I could think of was a wardrobe/Locker, but that is probably going to far.

All I need is a footlocker. I've been searching for one but it seems I'd better build one.......... and FAST!

Hi Corey,
you know, of course, that the Landser was not issued a full-blown footlocker like the GIs have them.
But the German army had tons of nondescript wooden boxes for all kinds of storage and transport purposes, so a simple wooden box painted fieldgrey will do just fine. You might even have a box like that at home or find one at a garage sale for next to nothing.

best regards,
Volker

I find the wooden boxes we get our ammo in very useful.

Landser and Ostfront sell all sorts of barracks gear, including the blankets and sheets/pillowcases:-

I bought quite a bit from the above 2, including ammo and ration bags/overnight bag and wine bottles with repro period labels.
