Germany army used issue paint same paint they used on equipment guns panzers etc when short they did use chalk paint problem today most so-called chalk is gypsum my friend.
Original chalk winter paint is fairly easy to spot on helmets even from wartime b/w photos basically it covers poorly correct issue is a heavy paste. I know an old gentleman who actually fought and survived on the Eastern Front they never ever used lacquer white paint in combat btw. contrary to what helmet dealers may say.
